Urban Shades Community Garden

Urban Shades Community Garden The Urban Shades Community Garden is a communal garden without plots where anyone is welcome to drop in and garden with us and take home food at end of day

Urban Shades community garden is a communal garden without plots where people from all walks of life can get together to garden, and share and take home produce when there is. It is called the "Urban Shades Community Garden" as the location is subject to some shade. The garden is located at the backyard of All Saints Anglican Church at the Intersection of Laurier Avenue and Blackburn Avenue. The p

roject is initiated by Faith House Ottawa and supported by All Saints Sandy Hill, City Councillor Mathieu Fleury, Action Sandy Hill Community Association, EnviroCentre, Sandy Hill Community Health Centre, and many residents. The Garden was launched in summer 2014. To start the garden: We were funded $9000 by the City of Ottawa through the Community Garden Development Fund (http://justfood.ca/community-gardening-network/community-garden-development-fund/). Thank you to Just Food for helping us coordinate the application process. As there were contaminants present on the soil in site (As with most sites in Ottawa downtown), the garden is in raised beds. In year 2015 we received $2500 in funding from the Cooperators. We are a 100% community/volunteer run project, so we will be appreciative of anyone who steps in and contributes and owns the project. To help, you could do one or more of the following things:

1) Join the Garden committee! - Contact Caroline John at [email protected] saying that you would like to join this committee and we can pool our resources.

2) Spread the word! - Let friends, neighbours and people know that this project is happening

3) GARDEN WITH US!

Dear all,
In the season of 2017, Urban Shades in Sandy Hill will be going into hibernation. Majorly due to the transition of a few key organizers and the location at All Saints Anglican being no longer vacant for use. We would like to think of this not as a closure but a hibernation where we zone in and do a resource check and strategize on how and where to blossom back out. The concept and vision of Urban Shades is still very much alive though no longer grounded or manifested in a location.
Thank you dearly to our community for your support and contributions over the past years. Please do stay in the loop as the seasons of change progress.
