What We Learned from the South End Truck Network Study

MCCATT members attended the June 15 South End Truck Network Study Public Consultation, where the City of Ottawa shared survey results and traffic data. Here are some of the key takeaways:

Residents are concerned:
📍 80% of survey respondents travel through the study area every day.
🚙 56% regularly use Bridge Street to cross the Rideau River.
⚠️ 69% cited unsafe truck behaviour on Bridge Street as a concern.

City traffic data shows:
🚚 Bridge Street carries 1,205 trucks per day (6% of all traffic).
🚛 Vimy Bridge carries 890 trucks per day (2% of all traffic).

These numbers suggest that Vimy Bridge is underutilized for truck traffic compared to Bridge Street and other river crossings.

The City also acknowledged that most trucks travelling along Bridge Street are simply passing through and have no destination or business in Manotick Village.
If most trucks aren't stopping in Manotick… why are they travelling through it?
MCCATT will continue advocating for safer streets and smarter truck routes.

Manotick's truck traffic concerns are making headlines.

MCCATT was featured on CTV News Ottawa last night as the City continues examining options for truck routes in Ottawa's south end.

In addition to the media coverage, MCCATT representatives attended the City of Ottawa's South End Truck Route Study Public Consultation at St. Mark High School, where we spoke directly with City officials and the consulting engineers leading the study to ensure that Manotick residents' concerns were clearly heard and understood.

Thank you to the many residents who attended the meeting and continue to support this community-led effort. With more than 1,500 petition signatures and growing public engagement, our message is resonating: heavy trucks should be routed on roads designed for heavy truck traffic, not through the heart of our village.

Residents in Ottawa’s south end will have three chances over the next week to weigh in on truck traffic in Ottawa’s south end and potential future routes for vehicles through Barrhaven, Manotick and Riverside South.

Dear MCCATT Members and Supporters,

This is a reminder that the City of Ottawa’s South End Truck Network Study Public Information Consultation Meeting will take place tomorrow, Monday, June 15, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at St. Mark High School.

This is an important opportunity for residents to ask questions and provide feedback on the impact of heavy-truck traffic using Bridge Street and Manotick Main Street as a shortcut through our village.
MCCATT’s independent engineering report concluded that the Bridge Street–Manotick Main Street corridor is not designed to accommodate the current volume of heavy-truck traffic and is unsuitable as a designated truck route. In contrast, River Road, Vimy Memorial Bridge, and Prince of Wales Drive are designated truck routes specifically designed to safely accommodate heavy vehicles. Heavy trucks should operate on roadways built for that purpose.

Unfortunately, recent comments from Councillor Desroches have continued to frame this issue as a conflict between communities rather than a public safety concern affecting all Ottawa residents. We have heard directly from many Riverside South residents who share our concerns and who regularly travel to Manotick for work, shopping, health care, recreation, and to visit family and friends.

This is not a Manotick-versus-Riverside South issue. It is a public safety issue. Municipal leaders have a responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents. The safest and most practical solution is to keep heavy trucks on roadways designed to handle them and out of village streets that were never intended to serve as truck corridors.

We encourage all residents to attend Monday’s meeting and make their voices heard.
