This Thanksgiving, we are reminded of the importance of connection and community.

For many people, returning to the community after incarceration can be an isolating experience. Family relationships may be strained. Employment and housing can be difficult to secure. Social networks may be limited.

No one successfully reintegrates alone.

At CoSA Ottawa, trained volunteers offer meaningful connection alongside accountability—helping people build healthier relationships, access community supports and create a more stable future.

We are grateful for our volunteers, partners, supporters and everyone working toward safer and more inclusive communities.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Mental health matters at every stage of life, including during the transition from incarceration back into the community.

Many people returning to the community face isolation, stigma, poverty, unemployment and limited social supports. These challenges can make successful reintegration even more difficult.

At CoSA Ottawa, we believe meaningful connection matters.

Through support, accountability and community, trained volunteers help Core Members build healthier relationships, navigate challenges and reduce isolation.

Supporting mental health is part of building safer, healthier communities for everyone.

What does accountability actually look like?

Accountability is often talked about but not always understood.

It is more than simply acknowledging past actions. Real accountability is ongoing. It means taking responsibility, being honest about risks and challenges, making healthier choices and continuing to work toward positive change.

It can also mean accepting support.

At CoSA Ottawa, we believe support and accountability are not opposites. Our trained volunteers provide meaningful connection while also encouraging Core Members to recognize risks, make responsible decisions and build healthier, pro-social lives.

Supporting someone does not mean excusing their actions.

Holding someone accountable does not mean they have to face every challenge alone.

Together, support and accountability can help create safer communities.

Today, CoSA Ottawa honours National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We remember the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, their families, and Indigenous communities.

Truth and Reconciliation calls on all of us to learn about Canada's history, acknowledge its ongoing impacts, and support meaningful action toward healing and justice.

As an organization committed to dignity, accountability, and community, we recognize the importance of listening, learning, and fostering relationships built on respect.

Today we encourage everyone to take time to reflect, learn, and participate in reconciliation in meaningful ways.

A Circle is more than a meeting.

It can mean a weekly conversation. Someone asking how you’re doing and genuinely listening.

It can mean talking through a difficult decision, practicing healthy communication, celebrating progress or connecting with community resources.

It can also mean being challenged when necessary and having people who encourage accountability and positive choices.

Most importantly, it can mean knowing you are not alone.

At CoSA Ottawa, Circles bring trained volunteers and Core Members together to provide meaningful support and accountability throughout the challenges of community reintegration.

Because connection matters. Support matters. Accountability matters.

Together, they help build safer communities.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.

Many people involved in the justice system experience mental health challenges, trauma, loneliness, and social isolation.

At CoSA Ottawa, we know that meaningful relationships and community connection can play an important role in supporting hope, resilience, and wellbeing.

While CoSA is not a mental health service, we work alongside community partners to help Core Members access appropriate supports while fostering positive social connections and accountability.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available.

Connection can save lives.
