Our Story
Ionic Lodge No. 526 was one of two founding lodges of the Westboro Masonic Temple, sited up the hill from the Village of Westboro, some two miles west of the western limit of the City of Ottawa. Westboro was a farming and logging community which also served as a rest stop for travelers proceeding along the Richmond Road towards the Town of Richmond and points further west. Ionic Lodge was instituted on December 9, 1914, and held its meetings at a building on Richmond Road. As the village grew and prospered, and the surrounding communities did likewise, the men of Ionic Lodge were active and influential in the development of the region. Another Masonic Lodge, Acacia Lodge No. 561, was spawned, and the two bodies worked together to establish the Westboro Masonic Temple which was consecrated in 1924. Over the course of time, Westboro was absorbed into Nepean, later the City of Nepean, and then amalgamated into the City of Ottawa. The Masonic Temple has migrated from being an up-scale rural lodge building to an active urban facility housing five craft lodges and a Chapter of the Eastern Star. (more to come)
