The Landon Pearson Resource Centre Landon Pearson Resource Centre for the Study of Childhood and Children's Rights

The Landon Pearson Resource Centre was created with a powerful vision: every child in Canada will grow up aware of his or her rights and responsibilities and enabled to exercise them within a receptive and respectful society. The Centre began with a donation by Senator Pearson to Carleton University, which included her extensive collection of books, documents and reports collected over a lifetime of engagement with children. The collection also contains archival material that documents the evolution over time of perceptions of childhood and conception of children’s rights both in Canada and abroad.

Today, the Landon Pearson Centre recognizes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

We remember the children who never returned home from residential schools, honour the healing journeys of residential school survivors, and recognize the lasting impacts of residential schools on Indigenous families and communities.

We invite you to explore the Landon Pearson Centre’s collection of resources on Indigenous children’s rights, histories, and experiences, and continue learning about the work of truth and reconciliation.

Call for Applications:

The Landon Pearson Centre for the Study of Childhood and Children’s Rights at Carleton University invites applications for the 2026 Dr. Joy Calkin Student Awards.

In 2026-27 three $5,000 student awards will be offered: one $5,000 award to a senior undergraduate student (3rd or 4th year student), one $5,000 award to a senior Indigenous student (4th year or graduate student), and one $5,000 award to a graduate student (MA or PhD).

The awards are to support student research projects on children’s rights-related issues and that focus on young children’s everyday lives.

Amount: $5000 per award
Deadline: Dec. 31 2026
English/French Applications welcome.

Two prizes of $500 each will be awarded—one for an undergraduate essay and one for a graduate essay.

We invite submissions from undergraduate and graduate students on any topic related to children’s rights. Essay contest winners will be presented with their award at the Child Rights Academic Network Conference at Carleton University at the end of April 2027 and may be considered for publication in the Canadian Journal of Children’s Rights.

Amount: $500 per award
Deadline: Dec. 31, 2026

Join the Landon Pearson Centre for a special event marking 30 years since the first World Congress Against the Commercial and Sexual Exploitation of Children.

This hybrid event will feature the launch of Professor Mark Hecht’s new book, Profit Over Protection, and a discussion with Guillaume Landry, Executive Director of ECPAT International, reflecting on his involvement in the first World Congress.

Light refreshments will be provided for those attending in person!

📣 Call for Poster Presentations | Child Rights Academic Network (CRAN)

Are you working on research or projects connected to children’s rights or young people’s lives?

The Landon Pearson Centre for the Study of Childhood and Children’s Rights invites students, early career researchers, young people, and community contributors to share their work at the CRAN meeting on April 24, 2026 at Carleton University in Ottawa.

This year’s theme, Children’s Right to Freedom of Expression and Identity, encourages reflection on how children and youth experience their rights across areas like mental health, education, inclusion, digital spaces, and climate change.

Whether you are new to children’s rights, working in community, or bringing a rights based perspective, this is your space to share, connect, and contribute.
Funding is available to support travel for selected presenters
