PIPSC is deeply concerned about the passage of Bill C-30 in the House of Commons today.

Buried in the bill are sweeping new powers that would allow the government to exempt companies, products, and activities from food safety laws and regulations – with almost zero transparency.

The public has a right to know about decisions that affect the safety of the food they eat.

Between cuts to food safety experts and special new exemptions for companies, this government is putting Canada’s health, safety, and economic security at risk.

Bill C-30 will likely pass in Parliament today. It will give Cabinet sweeping powers to approve previously-banned pesticides, circumventing Health Ministry guidelines, in the name of "economic security". And it should be a surprise to no one that this comes after extensive lobbying major pesticide companies.

Thank you Elizabeth May for rising on the floor to raise the issue of the government shutting down our country's leading organic research program in Swift Current, SK.

She raises an important question - does this government have a pro-pesticide bias?

Guelph is Agriculture Canada’s food safety testing centre.
It tests for pathogens, food quality, and foodborne disease.
The government is closing it.

"Gutting inspection work and downloading responsibility onto producers themselves is the same logic which led to the train disaster at Lac Mégantic which claimed 47 lives. That particular incident showed exactly how safety inspections were falsified or simply ignored by in-house protocols run by profit-hungry companies.

We can expect the same to happen to our food supply if the federal government takes this misguided approach: food safety is not a joke, and breaches can lead to death, illness or other tragedies. Food recalls can cripple and shutter small producers who don’t have the financial strength to sustain that kind of an economic hit."

Agriculture Union president Milton Dyck was on CBC Radio's Calgary Eyeopener this week to discuss the closing of 7 federal agriculture research facilities across Canada.

In his words: "This is cutting the future of our food framework. We're cutting our long-term future for short-term gain."

The federal government is trying to ram through Bill C-30, which would give sweeping powers to food companies to get around food safety laws in the name of "economic security".

The Bill will further erode the protections that Canadians have come to rely on, but that Carney is chipping away at.

Bill C-30 could allow for big food companies to get around food safety laws in the name of "economic security". Farmers and workers in food inspection are sounding the alarm.

Who does "economic security" actually benefit if it's not defined? And why should some companies get exemptions from food safety laws based on science and research? Who stands to profit? Certainly not the Canadian public.

Milton Dyck, President of the Agriculture Union says, “This is a giant, dangerous loophole being driven through the heart of Canada’s food safety system”.
