Program Assistant

Salary: $25,000 per year (Part-time/$27/hour)
Contract Period: 12 months with possibility of extension
Work Format: Hybrid (remote + in-person for events/workshops)
About Black History Ottawa
Black History Ottawa (BHO) is a community-based organization dedicated to researching, documenting, preserving, and promoting the history and contributions of Black communities in Ottawa. Through educational programs, cultural events, public tours, and community partnerships, BHO works to ensure that Black history remains an integral part of Ottawa’s shared story.
Position Summary
As delegated by the Board of Directors, the Program Assistant is responsible for supporting the planning, coordination, and delivery of programs and events that advance the mission of Black History Ottawa.
This role is ideal for an organized and community-oriented individual who is passionate about history, cultural programming, and community engagement.
This is a dynamic, hands-on role where no two days are the same. A typical day may include responding to emails, organizing meetings, updating social media and the website, coordinating event logistics, and supporting ongoing projects. The role balances administrative responsibilities with creative and community-focused work.
The position may require evening and weekend work to support events and programming.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in the coordination and delivery of programs and events (e.g., Black History Month, bus tours, community events)
Support the management of communications: email, social media, website, and newsletter
Participate in meetings
Liaise with community partners and identify collaboration opportunities
Support membership recruitment and engagement
Maintain records, calendars, and organizational systems
Assist with basic bookkeeping, reporting, and grant support
Represent BHO at community events as needed (exhibits, booths)
Support special projects and other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Post-secondary education in history, community development, communications, nonprofit management, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Experience coordinating events, programs, or community initiatives.
Skills & Competencies
Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset
Strong organizational and project management skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Experience with office applications, social media management and digital communications
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a volunteer Board
Strong relationship-building and community engagement skills
Basic bookkeeping or financial administration experience is an asset
Interest in Black history, heritage, and community engagement
Strong communications skills (written and verbal)
