Located in the northwest of Ireland, County Donegal is known for its rugged Atlantic coastline, breathtaking cliffs, beautiful beaches and strong Irish traditions. It's a place where the Irish language, music and storytelling remain an important part of everyday life.
But beyond its natural beauty, Donegal has witnessed some remarkable moments in Irish history.
On this day, October 12, 1798, the Battle of Tory Island took place off the coast of Donegal.
The battle was fought between the British Royal Navy and a French fleet attempting to bring troops and military support to the Irish Rebellion of 1798.
The French expedition included approximately 3,000 soldiers and Irish revolutionary leader Wolfe Tone, one of the founding members of the United Irishmen, who hoped to end British rule in Ireland.
Under the command of Sir John Borlase Warren, British warships intercepted the French fleet near Tory Island. A fierce naval battle followed, ending in a British victory and the capture of several French ships, including the vessel carrying Wolfe Tone.
The defeat marked the end of the final major French attempt to support the rebellion.
228 years later, the Battle of Tory Island remains an important chapter in Ireland's struggle for independence and a reminder of the extraordinary history found along Donegal's shores.
