🌧️🚛 STORM RECOVERY UPDATE: WASTE COLLECTION & DISPOSAL CHANGES 🚛🌧️
This is an UPDATE to yesterday's message regarding storm-related waste collection following the July 1 extreme weather event.
✅ The City has now reversed its earlier decision to charge disposal fees at the Trail Waste Facility Landfill and is doing what Councillor Devine recommended two days ago: waiving tipping fees for flood-affected residents. To receive free disposal at Trail Road, residents must provide:
📄 A Service Request number
🪪 Valid photo ID
🏠 Proof of address
📝 To obtain a Service Request number, you must either:
📞 Report your flooding or storm-related waste through 3-1-1, or
💻 Use the City's Report Basement Flooding webpage:

💰 If you've already paid tipping fees, keep your receipt, Service Request number, and proof of address. The City says impacted residents may be eligible for reimbursement, with details to follow.
🚛 Starting on Monday, July 6, there will be a Special Collection for storm-debris across parts of the city that were most heavily-impacted by flooding, including Ward 9. We don't yet have a schedule for this Special Collection, but residents are advised to get their debris to the curb for Monday morning. Residents may place eligible storm-related materials at the curb, including:
✅ Flood-damaged furniture and household contents
✅ Storm-related garbage
✅ Bulky items (the normal 3-item garbage limit has been waived)
✅ Flood-damaged carpets, rugs, mattresses, upholstered furniture, clothing, and other household textiles
✅ Up to 2 containers of flood-related construction debris (such as drywall, plywood, insulation, etc.)
⚠️ Construction debris must be:
📦 In containers no larger than 140 litres
⚖️ Weigh less than 15 kg (33 lbs) each
🗑️ Have a removable lid
⚠️ The City will collect a maximum of two containers of construction debris from the curb. Larger quantities should be taken to the Trail Waste Facility, or handled through your insurance provider or contractor.
🧵 Flood-damaged textiles such as carpets, rugs, clothing, mattresses, upholstered furniture, and similar materials can be collected, but items contaminated by sewage or other hazardous materials should be securely bagged to protect collection staff.
🥬 Spoiled food and organic waste should continue to go in your Green Bin. If your Green Bin is full due to power outages, you may place additional bags beside it that are clearly labelled "Green Bin" and they will be collected on your regular collection day.
🚫 Household hazardous waste is not accepted through curbside collection.
🚫 Electronic waste (e-waste) is not accepted through curbside collection.
🌿 Yard waste and branches should continue to follow regular collection rules.
⏳ Due to the unprecedented volume of storm-related debris across Ottawa, collection may take several weeks and crews may need to make multiple passes. If materials are not collected immediately, please leave them at the curb.
