April is officially recognized as Sikh Heritage Month in Canada, celebrating the over 120-year history, culture, and contributions of Sikh Canadians. Proclaimed federally in 2019, this month (especially April 13/14) coincides with Vaisakhi, which marks the birth of the Khalsa in 1699.

The Ottawa Sikh Society Gurdwara Sahib is located at 25 Gurdwara Road in Ottawa. The first two buildings were the Sikh Temple and Community Center. Ottawa Sikh Society asked Nepean to change Cletus St to Gurdwara Road to indicate the location of the Sikh Temple. The name Gurdwara means Temple of the Sikhs. The 800 Sikh families in the area would be the primary users of the street.

Lloyd Francis (1920–2007) officially opened the new Gurdwara on April 14, 1984. He was a prominent Ottawa politician and Speaker of the House of Commons. Francis represented the ridings of Carleton and Ottawa West as a Liberal Member of Parliament between 1963 and 1984. Francis was a major developer in Nepean (specifically Bells Corners and Parkwood Hills) during the 1950s and 60s. His work as a businessman and his role as Deputy Mayor and MP for the area coincided with the period when the Sikh community began establishing roots in Ottawa.

Sundown tonight marks the beginning of Passover, also known as Pesach, one of the most significant holidays in the Jewish faith. The eight-day celebration begins this evening, April 1, and continues through April 9.

Passover commemorates the Exodus, the story of the Jewish people’s journey from slavery in Egypt to freedom. It is a time centered on family, remembrance, and the passing of traditions down through the generations.

Families gather for a Seder, a ritual meal where the story of Passover is retold through symbolic foods, including matzah, bitter herbs, and charoset, each representing a part of the journey from slavery to freedom

Did you know?
The Last Supper is historically understood to have been a Passover Seder, making this holiday a significant part of the shared history between Jewish and Christian neighbours.

To everyone celebrating Passover in Mississippi Mills and beyond, may your Seder table be filled with meaning, connection, and joy!

Chag Pesach Sameach! Happy Passover!
