Representation is more than having a seat at the table. It’s about having a voice that is heard and considered.

In Ottawa, decisions about housing, employment, healthcare, education, economic opportunities and community services directly affect Black communities.

So, where do you think Black voices need to be heard more?

What areas should Ottawa prioritize when it comes to meaningful Black representation and participation?

Representation matters — especially where decisions are made.

Who has a seat at the table matters.

When decisions are made about housing, employment, healthcare, education, youth development, economic opportunities and community services, the voices of the communities most affected should be part of those conversations.

For Black communities, meaningful representation means more than visibility. It means having opportunities to participate, lead, influence decisions and shape the policies that affect our lives.

Ottawa is stronger when its leadership reflects the diversity of the people who call this city home.

At the Ottawa Black Coalition, we believe that Black voices belong at every table where decisions about our communities are being made.

Representation. Participation. Leadership.

Black Labour History: Donald Moore

In 1954, Black community leader and former railway porter Donald Moore led a delegation to Ottawa to challenge Canada’s discriminatory immigration policies. The delegation included representatives from unions, labour councils and community organizations. They met with the federal Minister of Citizenship and Immigration and presented recommendations for change.

Their advocacy contributed to the eventual introduction of the West Indian Domestic Scheme in 1955, which opened a pathway for Black Caribbean women to come to Canada as domestic workers. Moore’s continued advocacy also helped Black domestic workers gain access to permanent residency after one year of work.

This Labour Day, we honour the people whose work helps build our communities. 🇨🇦🖤

From healthcare and education to construction, entrepreneurship, public service, caregiving and countless other fields, Black workers contribute every day to the strength and prosperity of Ottawa.

But recognizing contribution is only part of the conversation.

Every worker deserves more than an opportunity to work. They deserve an opportunity to grow.

That means fair access to employment, equitable pay, safe and respectful workplaces, mentorship, advancement and leadership opportunities.

Ottawa has identified racial equity in the workplace as a priority within its Anti-Racism Strategy. As we celebrate Labour Day, we must continue asking what it takes to ensure Black workers are not only represented in the workforce, but are able to advance, lead and thrive.

At the Ottawa Black Coalition, we celebrate the contributions of Black workers and remain committed to advancing equity, opportunity and belonging in our workplaces and communities.

Happy Labour Day
