There is a place to develop and improve public speaking skills. This place is East OttawaToastmasters. What about having had to critique a work colleague?

At every East Ottawa meeting you will have the opportunity to learn leadership skills, and impromptu/off the cuff speaking skills. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you had been asked a question and didn’t know how to reply? Or maybe you had to organize a meeting or event and didn’t know where to start? The great thing is that you get to tackle these skills at your own pace. And we must never forget that Toastmasters is also about speaking. We have 2-3 speaking opportunities at every meeting. Our speakers vary from beginners to advanced speakers and we all receive excellent feedback in order to assist us in our future speeches and speaking endeavours. So whether you are looking to be a better leader or a better speaker, East Ottawa Toastmasters is for you. Drop by for a free visit. Please check our schedule for meeting dates. 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐔𝐀𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍? 𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐄 𝐈𝐓 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋.

You can have the most interesting public speaking fact, statistic or argument—but if your audience doesn't understand 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦, you've lost an opportunity to connect.

Try this simple phrase:
👉 “𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮.”
𝘐𝘵 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘢 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘢𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵. Instead of simply delivering information, you show them the “𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘮𝘦?”

For example:
📊 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭: “People make decisions based on first impressions.”
🎯 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐠𝐞: “Here’s why this matters to you: your next job interview, presentation or networking conversation could be shaped by those first few seconds.”
That's the difference between giving information and making information relevant.
Your audience is always wondering: “Why should I care?” 𝐀𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧—𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲'𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠.

🎤 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭
𝐖𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠? Here’s a simple speaking exercise that can completely change your awareness of how you deliver your words and ideas.

Choose one sentence and say it several times. Each time, emphasize a different word. Notice how the meaning, attitude or implication changes depending on where you put the emphasis.
It’s a great way to practise vocal variety, tone, expression and effective communication—and it can help prevent your delivery from sounding flat or monotone.

4. “I didn’t say 𝘴𝘩𝘦 took the money.”
5. “I didn’t say she 𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘬 the money.”
6. “I didn’t say she took 𝘵𝘩𝘦 money.”

It's the same words but the message for each line is different depending on which word was emphasized.. 😉

It’s called the 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘺-𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘌𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵. Research on memory shows that people tend to recall information at the beginning and end of a sequence more easily than information in the middle. The same principle can work in public speaking and presentations.

𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐩: Don’t bury your strongest point in the middle. Put your most important idea first or last—and, if it’s really important, reinforce it in both places.
𝐀𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐩: Give each section one clear idea. If you're trying to make three points in one paragraph, your audience may remember none of them. Keep your message focused and make the key takeaway easy to spot.
𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐢𝐩: When presenting, take full advantage of vocal variety, gestures, storytelling, and big transitions to draw more attention to the points in the middle of the speech.
