Alice The Moose: The A2A Algonquin to Adirondacks Collaborative Inspiration
By: Jean Dabros - from our latest edition of River Talk

When "Alice" the moose was collared and released into New York's Adirondack Park in 1998 she began an inspirational journey. After two years she left her home park and headed for the Canada/US border, swimming across the St. Lawrence River in the spring of 2000 and walking across Ontario's four lane Highway 401. By winter of 2000 she had crossed into Ontario's Algonquin Provincial Park, completing a journey of 570 km. Alice's journey underscores the importance of the ecological corridors that run through the Thousand Islands/Frontenac Arch Biosphere region and the need for an understanding of wild life's "Right to Roam".

Can the "Architects of the Wild" find their way home? 🐺🌲

The Eastern Wolf once roamed across North America, but today, they are confined to small pockets of Ontario and Québec. As a keystone species, they don’t just live in the forest — they shape it, maintaining the health and balance of our entire ecosystem.

The A2A region is a hopeful pathway for their recovery.

We’re thrilled to be partnering with Dr. Jonathan Cole and Dr. Jeff Bowman from Trent University (supported by Mitacs) to map out exactly what these wolves need to thrive. By identifying the best habitats and "linkages," we’re creating a roadmap for conservation that works.

Let’s ensure the Eastern Wolf can once again roam safely across the landscape they call home.

How do we move from "mapping a line" to "nurturing a corridor"?

Join the A2A Collaborative, Plenty Canada and Frontenac Arch Biosphere for a presentation on the culmination and core lessons of our recent Ecological Corridors project. Supported by Parks Canada, this initiative worked to identify and protect vital wildlife linkages within the Frontenac Arch—a critical bridge in the A2A landscape. 🌲

Throughout this project, we have been working to adopt an Ethical Space and Two-Eyed Seeing approach. Our goal was to move toward a model of land stewardship where Western science and Indigenous Knowledge work in tandem. We invite you to hear about our progress, our challenges, and our ongoing journey in this collaborative space.

What we will share:

- Refining the Maps: How we integrated local and Indigenous Knowledge to sharpen regional wildlife models.
- On-the-Ground Insights: Practical lessons from "ground-truthing" efforts in high-priority corridors.
- The Path of Collaboration: Honest reflections on the process of integrating Indigenous-led approaches into connectivity mapping.

Hope to see you there!

Can’t make the live session? Register anyway to receive the recording and access to our resource library following the event.

Happy ! 🐢🐸

Wetlands are one of our planet’s most hardworking ecosystems. They are vital support systems that give space for at-risk wildlife, protect communities from flooding, provide clean drinking water, and help store carbon.

6% of the wetlands found on Earth are located right here in Ontario! But despite their value, we are losing them fast. Southern Ontario has already lost over 70% of its original wetlands—with numbers climbing as high as 90% in areas like Toronto and Niagara.

We can’t protect what we don’t value. This World Wetland Day, let’s take action!
