Something caught my attention when I was out walking. It was a little squirrel in distress - his leg was mangled, he was mangy and there were a lot of flies swarming around him. He tried to scurry under a bush but had troubling pulling his own weight behind him.
I was only a block away from Glebe Pet Hospital, and I would like to extend grateful thanks to the professionals there who agreed to humanely end this little squirrel's suffering if I could catch him and bring him in.
More grateful thanks to the complete stranger who, upon overhearing the conversation, quickly left the vet office only to return just as quickly with a suitable box and an offer to help.
The little squirrel, most likely destined to endure a long painful and drawn out end, will never know the compassion and empathy shown to him in his time of desperate need, and I thank everyone who chooses to help an animal in distress.
Every one of earth's creatures deserves to be treated with respect and dignity.
Rest in Peace, little Squirrel. No more pain or suffering. I only wish we could have done more for you.
