We have an urgent dog in a local shelter who we are looking for a foster home for as soon as possible!

What we know:
Female, young adult, mastiff mix. She does bark when left; therefore, she is not a match for apartments. She is friendly, bouncy, and energetic and does need her exercise!

Medically, she has had at least 2 epileptic seizures at the shelter and needs to be placed in the comforts of a home for observation... ideally, with someone home more often. She may be in foster care for some time as we learn more about her medical needs.

She appears to be good with friendly dogs, but we have no way to test her with cats or kids. This means only dog savvy teens and up and no small animals in the home.

We are looking for a foster in or around the Ottawa area, and the foster must be able to take her to her medical appts in West Ottawa.

We know it is a lot to ask. But we'll never feel badly for trying ♡

As the leaves change and the temperature dips with the progression of fall, the likelihood of your pups interacting with deer ticks increases significantly. Deer ticks love this time of year, so here are some tips to keep you, your dogs and other household pets safe this autumn.

1. Use veterinary-approved tick preventives on your dog (more info below).

2. Avoid wooded areas and tall grass.

3. Check your pets and yourself after going outside. Ticks can be transmitted to indoor cats, so make sure to do a thorough search.

4. Do not handle ticks with your bare hands. Ticks transmit numerous diseases to dogs and people, including:

*Borreliosis (Lyme Disease)
*Anaplasmosis
*Babesiosis
*Ehrlichiosis

5. Contact your vet or doctor with questions.

It’s National Pitbull Awareness Day!

Did you know that pitbulls, which is actually a term to encompass a number of different breeds, were originally bred to be family dogs? In temperance tests, this commonly misunderstood and stereotyped breed ranked the second-best temperament of all dogs, only topped by golden retrievers.

It is important to understand that their reputation for being “dangerous dogs” is a result of humans training them to do dangerous things. Dog behaviour cannot be predicted based on breed. Each dog is unique and their behaviour is a reflection of their individual temperament and upbringing.

LOOKING FOR PARTICIPANTS: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is one of the most common heart diseases in dogs. Although genetics are the primary cause of DCM, nutritionally-mediated DCM, and its association with grain-free dog diets has been a recent focus in veterinary medicine.

Why do only some dogs consuming grain-free diets develop cardiac dysfunction while the majority remain healthy? 🐶

This is what Dr Shari Raheb and her team want to explore in this OVC Pet Trust funded study!

We are looking for dogs with suspected cardiac dysfunction that have been eating the same grain-free kibble diet ≥ 6 months.

Doberman, Boxer, Irish Wolfhound, Newfoundland, Great Dane, Cocker Spaniel, Portuguese Water Dogs, and/or dogs with comorbidities and/or on cardiac medications will be unable to participate.

If this sounds like your dog or a dog you know, we would love to speak with you about our Cardiology study.

When Lyme Ontario are at cottage/spring shows, spreading awareness with our tick display, people are shocked at just how small a tick can really be. This is why it is so important to check for ticks every time you come in from outdoors.
