After a lifetime of building communities across Ottawa, former mayor Jackie Holzman wasn't looking for luxury when it came time to retire. She was looking for community.

Today, the former Mayor of Ottawa is a resident herself.

Jackie's connection to Unitarian House began through her lifelong work advocating for stronger communities and housing for seniors. Decades later, she found herself looking for something very similar to what she'd spent her career advocating for: a community where people could remain active, connected and supported.

We're sharing a little of Jackie's remarkable connection to Unitarian House, and there's much more to come over the next few weeks.

In just a few short weeks, our community has already come together to raise more than $3,300 in support of Unitarian House of Ottawa's Financial Assistance Program through The Grand Parade.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has donated, registered a team, or shared our campaign. Your generosity is helping ensure that residents can continue living in the community they call home, even when financial circumstances change.

What if no one ever had to leave the community they call home because they ran out of money? That's the future we're walking towards.

This September, in partnership with The Grand Parade, we're raising over $50,000 to support our Financial Assistance Program, a program that provides more than $160,000 in financial assistance each year to ensure seniors can access affordable retirement housing, regardless of their financial circumstances.

On August 21, our Community Beer & Wine Garden will officially kick off our Grand Parade campaign, bringing together residents, families, neighbors, volunteers, and community partners for an afternoon of connection, great food, and fun.

Whether you join us at the Beer Garden, register for The Grand Parade, or support the campaign with a donation, you're helping ensure that Unitarian House remains a place where community comes first.

There's a lot happening at Unitarian House over the next few weeks, and we'd love to have you join us!

Our Summer Beer Garden & BBQ on August 21 marks the beginning of this year's Grand Parade fundraising campaign in support of our Financial Assistance Program.

If you're looking for a fun evening out, we'd love to welcome you to the Beer Garden for great food, live entertainment, and the chance to connect with residents, families, and friends of Unitarian House. We will also be holding an OPEN HOUSE from 3:00-4:00PM.

Enter in our 50/50 Lottery Draw, where one lucky winner will receive 50% of the jackpot, while the other half helps support residents through our Financial Assistance Program. Winner will be chosen September 20th.

If you can't make it for our Beer Garden, Join us for the walk! Whether you choose to walk, donate, volunteer, or simply cheer us on, every bit of support helps ensure residents can continue to call Unitarian House home, regardless of financial circumstances.

At Unitarian House, we believe every older adult deserves affordable access to age with dignity in a caring, supportive environment.

Through our Financial Assistance Program, we provide more than $160,000 in annual support to residents in our apartment community. This assistance helps ensure residents can continue to call Unitarian House home, even when life circumstances change.

The challenge? This program receives no government funding. Every dollar comes from the generosity of our community.

That's why The Grand Parade is so important.

Last year, together we raised over $47,000. This year, we're aiming to double our impact so we can continue growing this vital program and supporting the seniors who rely on it.

Our residents got creative with a fun and practical summer project! We started with fabric and sewed our very own cooling neck wraps. Once they were stitched together, we filled them with special cooling beads that absorb water and stay cool for hours.

These handmade neck wraps have been the perfect way to stay comfortable during these hot summer days. It's always wonderful to create something with our own hands that we can enjoy every day!
