Communauté fédérale des minorités visibles (CFMV) de la fonction publique fédérale du Canada The Community of Federal Visible Minorities (CFVM) provides an independent forum for visible minorities to organize, discuss issues, and advance their concerns with respect to individual and collective well-being, professional advancement, and representation within the federal public service (FPS) of Canada. As such, the CFVM strives to participate in and help shape the national identity of our country with the singular objective to ensure that our federal institutions like the FPS are built on the foundations of merit, inclusiveness, respect, integrity, collaboration and professionalism. La communauté fédérale des minorités visibles (CFMV) fournir un forum indépendant aux minorités visibles afin de s'organiser, de discuter et de faire progresser leurs préoccupations en ce qui concerne leur bien-être individuel et collectif, leur promotion et leur représentation au sein de la fonction publique fédérale (FPF) du Canada. Toronto police are investigating recent violent threats made against the Toronto Islamic Centre, a mosque near Yonge and Bloor streets.

An individual issued “direct threats of violence against the centre and its staff” in a “deeply disturbing phone call” this week, the mosque said in a statement to their social media on Friday.

“During the call, the individual used Islamophobic and racist language and made explicit threats of murder,” the centre said.

In another phone call, the individual told a staff member to search for the Christchurch mosque attack in New Zealand, where 51 Muslim worshippers were killed in 2019.

“The individual then stated that someone in Toronto would do the same to us,” the centre said.

Toronto police are asking anyone with information to come forward. Police also confirmed that they are increasing patrols in the area.

“There are no other details available at this time,” police said.

In a statement to social media, Mayor Olivia Chow wrote that she is “deeply disturbed by the reports of heinous threats.”

“Toronto is a city built on compassion, diversity, and a profound respect for people of all faiths,” she wrote in a post on X. “Every resident deserves to feel safe in their place of worship.”

The centre received a similar threat in 2020, and an individual “physically harmed” three worshippers at the mosque in 2023, according to the centre’s statement.

“These incidents underscore that threats of Islamophobic violence are not abstract and have real and lasting impacts on members of our local community,” the centre said. “We are taking all necessary steps to support those affected and to strengthen safety measures at the Centre.”
