Today is the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula.
Ethiopia has one of the highest rates of obstetric fistula in the world, with thousands of women affected each year. But with access to quality maternal healthcare, skilled birth attendants, and timely surgical treatment, fistula is both preventable and treatable.

Our partners in the field are working tirelessly to expand maternal health services across Ethiopia. They are also training former fistula patients as Safe Motherhood Ambassadors to educate communities, promote maternal health, and help break the stigma surrounding obstetric fistula.

Ending fistula is possible. Join the movement. Share the message. End the silence.

This International Day of Happiness, we wanted to share the incredible work of our partner’s Safe Motherhood Ambassadors. These brave, inspirational women who have experienced the trauma of living with the devastating childbirth injury, obstetric fistula, are determined other women should not experience the same.

Baro is one of these women. After two days in labour, she tragically lost her baby. The prolonged labour had caused an obstetric fistula. Health workers helped her access the treatment she needed, and from there she heard about our partner Healing Hands of Joy and decided to become a Safe Motherhood Ambassador.

Their project helps women who have survived fistula to rediscover their joy and self-esteem, and trains them as educators, helping women reclaim their sense of purpose after the trauma they have been through.

“I became so happy and hopeful. Thanks to God I had successful surgery and I am so happy. I want to support the women in my village to prevent them from obstetric fistula. I will share my experience with them.’’

With your support, our partners are working to find women living with obstetric fistula, helping them access treatment and support, and raising awareness to prevent fistula.

This we want to raise awareness of the incredible work our partner APDA (Afar Pastoralist Development Association) is doing to end FGM.

With your amazing support, their dedicated team is:

• Training Women Extension Workers, who go house to house to support women and girls, advocating for their rights. By involving both girls and boys in discussions, the next generation can end FGM.
• Mentoring and supervising Traditional Birth Attendants to stop performing FGM, protect babies from harmful practices and become advocates for change.
• Working with religious and clan leaders, who use their influence and authority to dispel misconceptions about religious teachings and the law.

Thank you. Together, we can protect girls and end FGM.

Today is International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Ge***al Mutilation.

It is a day to stand together to end this harmful practice that affects millions of girls and women.

In Ethiopia, 25 million girls and women have undergone FGM.

FGM is illegal in Ethiopia, but many girls are still at risk. Particularly girls living in rural areas, and who face barriers in accessing education.

Our partner APDA is working in the rural Afar region to raise awareness of the dangers and bring an end to FGM - find more about their work via the link in our bio.

Our journey this winter is not just about ending Obstetric Fistula. It's about rewriting stories, transforming lives, and giving hope.

In Ethiopia, many women face the devastating effects of obstetric fistula, a childbirth injury caused by prolonged, obstructed labor. This condition leads to urinary incontinence and often results in severe social stigma and isolation.

But there's hope. Our partner, Hope of Light, a local Ethiopian-run organization, cares for women with fistulas. Your kindness and generosity can help provide life-changing fistula surgery and vital aftercare such as physiotherapy and counseling.

Ethiopia has one of the highest rates of obstetric fistula globally, with thousands of women affected each year. Tragically, in nearly every case, the baby does not survive.

Our partners in Ethiopia are dedicated to providing better maternal health care to pregnant women across the country. They are also working to train former fistula patients to identify others in the community who face the same issue.

Fistula is both preventable and treatable, and you can be part of the solution today. Find out how through the link in our bio>>
