On Women’s Equality Day, we honour the ongoing fight for gender justice.
This day marks a historic milestone, the certification of the 19th Amendment in 1920 granting women in the U.S. the right to vote. Here in Canada, women began gaining voting rights in 1918, but many, especially Indigenous women, were denied that right until 1960.
It’s a day to recognize the progress we’ve made and the work still ahead. Gender inequality continues to impact women’s access to housing, employment, safety, and justice.
At JHS Ottawa, we stand with all women, cis, trans, and non-binary people, who face barriers in the justice system and beyond.
Let’s build a future where every voice is heard, every right is upheld, and every woman has the opportunity to thrive.

This , the numbers tell a devastating story:
– 305 million people need urgent aid
– 1 in 5 children live in or flee conflict zones
– 360+ aid workers were killed last year
– Millions more displaced by war and climate disasters
Behind every number is a human life, a family, a future.
The humanitarian system is stretched to its limits, but compassion, solidarity, and justice can pull us back from the edge.
Today, we honour those who risk everything to help others, and we commit to building a world that is effective, just, and humane.
✊ Stand with us. Raise your voice. Demand protection, dignity, and accountability.

Every young person deserves a seat at the table, and the power to shape it.
Today we honour youth who lead with courage, demand fairness, and believe in second chances.
💛 Your voice matters. Use it.

📅 International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples
Indigenous people in Canada are over-policed, over-incarcerated and under-protected.
They make up just 5% of the population, but over 30% of the federal prison population. Indigenous women are 10x more likely to be stopped by police, and 4.5x more likely to be murdered, with far fewer cases leading to charges. That’s not justice.
At JHS Ottawa, we support Indigenous-led healing, advocacy, and reintegration. Programs like Ikaarvik House, Inuit counselling, and wraparound supports help restore dignity, connection, and community.
With Prisoners' Justice Day on August 10, we remember: justice must include those the system has failed.

Hello everyone ~ For our second year in a row The John Howard Society of Ottawa, Lisgar Women's Residence, has been invited to join the Centretown Community Association this weekend at the Elgin Street Market 🌻

Joining us again will be one of our resident artists, Kim M, who will be featuring her new handmade collection of dream catchers and she would like to invite you to see the work she has made this year! ✨️ Art is Kim's medicine, and by participating in these markets we have seen her truly shine within our community, while also inspiring other women along the way. Please join us!!

The Lisgar Women's Residence is a supportive housing community in Centretown Ottawa that provides permanent homes for 29 women who have exited chronic homelessness. 💛
