Armenian National Committee of Canada Advancing Armenian-Canadian issues of importance in Canada

The Armenian National Committee of Canada (ANCC) is a grass roots organization founded in 1965 to address the concerns of the Canadian-Armenian community on a broad range of issues. The ANCC seeks to:
-Foster public awareness about issues affecting the Armenian community in Canada and abroad;
-Represent the collective Armenian-Canadian viewpoint on matters of public interest;
-Act as an advocacy

group on matters of interest to the Armenian-Canadian community;
-Support and promote human rights issues in Canada;
-Serve as a liaison between the community and their elected officials, non-governmental agencies, and others.

The Armenian National Committee of Canada (ANCC) expresses serious concern regarding remarks made by Canada’s Secretary of State for Defence Procurement, Stephen Fuhr CD, describing Turkey as a “trusted partner” and “valuable ally” amid discussions of expanded Canada–Turkey defense cooperation.

Past experience has clearly demonstrated otherwise. In 2020, Turkey illegally diverted Canadian-manufactured drone avionics to Azerbaijan during the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) war, contributing to the deaths of innocent civilians and devastating consequences for the Armenian people.

In light of this record, any renewed military-industrial cooperation with Turkey raises profound ethical, security, and accountability concerns.

The ANCC strongly opposes these developments and will continue to monitor them closely.

Canada’s 2026 Census: Identify as Armenian
---

Canada’s 2026 national census began on May 4, and Canadians have until May 12 to complete their census questionnaire online.

Accurate participation helps ensure that Armenian Canadians are properly represented in demographic data used by governments, institutions, and community organizations for planning and services.

Short-Form Census:

All households will receive the short-form census, which includes questions about languages spoken.
This is where you can indicate Armenian as one of your languages.

Long-Form Census:

1 in 4 households will receive the long-form census, which also includes:
Question 23: Ethnicity
Question 30: Religion
Here you may identify as Armenian.

Take Part:

Completing the census is a simple but important way to help ensure that Canada’s Armenian community is accurately counted and represented.
Please complete your census before the May 12 deadline and encourage family and friends to do the same.

Yesterday, the Armenian National Committee of Canada organized a commemoration on Parliament Hill marking the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

The event, sponsored by MP Michael Coteau, Chair of the Canada–Armenia Parliamentary Friendship Group, brought together federal ministers, Members of Parliament from all parties, senators, members of the diplomatic corps, civil servants, and leaders of the Armenian-Canadian community.

Among those in attendance were Armenia’s Ambassador to Canada, H.E. Anahit Harutyunyan; Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Anita Anand; the Hon. Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture, and the Minister responsible for Official Languages; His Eminence Archbishop Papken Tcharian, Prelate of the Armenian Prelacy of Canada, as well as senators and Members of Parliament from all political parties.

Speakers emphasized the enduring importance of remembrance, the urgent need to condemn and prevent genocide, to confront and combat hatred and genocide denialism, and to address Artsakh as a central and ongoing issue in the pursuit of justice.

We thank all ministers, Members of Parliament, senators, and distinguished guests for their valued attendance and solidarity.

Statement by the Hon. Anita Anand, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs on the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide
—-

Today, we commemorate the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. We stand with Canadian Armenians to honour the memory of the 1.5 million Armenians who perished and all those who suffered during this dark chapter in history.

We reaffirm the importance of preserving the collective memory of those who endured these massacres. Recognition carries with it a solemn commitment; to remember the persecutions, the crimes against humanity inflicted upon the Armenian people and to fight against denialism and hatred.

As we commemorate the Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation and Prevention Month, it is a time for us to reflect on and learn from the stories of all the victims and survivors of genocide.

Statement by the Leader of the Official Opposition on Armenian Genocide Memorial Day
—-

I would like to thank the Armenian National Committee of Canada (ANCC) for their tireless work in support of a free, united, and independent Armenia.

Today, we remember the 1.5 million innocent Armenians who were systematically deported and murdered by the Ottoman Empire beginning in 1915. Because of these atrocities, families were torn apart and an entire people suffered simply because of who they were.

Canada must always stand for truth. That means recognizing the Armenian Genocide without hesitation, rejecting denial in all its forms, and standing firmly with those who continue to seek justice.

We must also recognize that the Armenian people continue to confront serious challenges today. The forced displacement of more than 100,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh is a stark reminder that injustice and persecution have not been confined to the past.

Armenians have the right to live in peace, security, and freedom in their ancestral homeland.

On this solemn day, we stand in solidarity with Canadians of Armenian descent. We honour the memory of those who were lost and we support those who continue to resist.

The Armenian people have shown extraordinary resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship. Their culture, their faith, and their identity have endured – and will continue to endure.

As we mark the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide – one of the darkest chapters in human history – please know that Canada’s Conservatives stand with you.

Statement by Prime Minister Carney on Armenian Genocide Memorial Day
—-

“Today, we join Armenian communities in Canada and around the world in commemorating Armenian Genocide Memorial Day, also known as Medz Yeghern. We honour the victims and all those who endured unimaginable suffering during this dark chapter in history.

In 2006, Canada officially recognised the Armenian Genocide – providing long overdue acknowledgment of this tragedy. With recognition comes the promise that we will never forget the persecution, violence, and atrocities committed against the Armenian people.

In Canada, April marks Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation and Prevention Month – a time to reflect on the consequences of ignorance and complicity. The responsibility to confront hate belongs to all of us, and that responsibility begins with remembrance. Through remembrance, we commit to vigilance – so that these atrocities are never repeated.”

Déclaration du premier ministre Carney à l’occasion du Jour commémoratif du génocide arménien
—-

On the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, the Armenian National Committee of Canada solemnly commemorates the 1.5 million Armenians who were systematically annihilated in 1915 by the Ottoman Turkish Empire.

Today, we witness its continuation in new forms: the ethnic cleansing of Artsakh, the forced displacement of its Armenian population, the destruction of cultural and religious heritage, and the ongoing detention of Armenian prisoners. These are not isolated acts but the direct consequence of a century of denial and impunity, which continues to embolden perpetrators.

We are equally alarmed by the persistence of denialism by Turkey and Azerbaijan, and by policies that, under external pressure, risk compromising truth, justice, and the fundamental rights of our people.

In the face of these challenges, our resolve only strengthens. The Armenian National Committee of Canada remains steadfast in its commitment to remembrance, recognition, reparations, and prevention. We will continue to advance concrete measures—sanctioning perpetrators, securing the release of Armenian POWs, protecting cultural heritage, and upholding the right of return and self-determination for the Armenians of Artsakh.

As we honor the victims of the past, we reaffirm our duty to defend the future. Never again must mean now.
