𝗜𝗖𝗖 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗮 𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗹𝘂𝗸𝗶 𝗞𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗖𝗖 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿 (𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲-𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬)

04 June 2026 — ICC Canada will host the office of the ICC Chair starting in July 2026 and is responsible for nominating an Inuk leader to this four-year position. The ICC Chair is the international leader of the Inuit Circumpolar Council and represents Inuit from across Inuit Nunaat (the Inuit homeland that spans Canada, Alaska, Greenland, and Chukotka).

Through a public nomination period for the position of ICC Chair and after a thorough review process of all applicants, the ICC Canada Board of Directors unanimously supported the nomination of Aluki Kotierk for the 2026-2030 ICC Chair term.

Inuit delegates from across Inuit Nunaat have been notified and a resolution to acclaim the nominee for ICC Chair will be presented on the closing day of the 2026 ICC General Assembly. This is scheduled to take place on July 25, 2026 in Iqaluit, Nunavut.

Additional Information on the role of ICC Chair:

The ICC Chair is the international leader of the Inuit Circumpolar Council. They are the public face of the organization, representing Inuit of Canada, Alaska, Greenland, and Chukotka at international forums and in the media. The ICC Chair coordinates the ICC Executive Council in their implementation of ICC’s mandate, to be contained in the 2026 ICC Declaration that is given by delegates to the 2026 ICC General Assembly. The ICC Chair is a consensus builder, ensuring that each Executive Council member and the regions they represent are heard and reflected in ICC activities and decisions.

The Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) is an Indigenous Peoples’ Organization (IPO), founded in 1977 to promote and celebrate the unity of 180,000 Inuit from Alaska (USA), Canada, Greenland, and Chukotka (Russia). ICC works to promote Inuit rights, safeguard the Arctic environment, and protect and promote the Inuit way of life. In regard to climate change, we believe that it is crucial for world leaders and governments to recognize, respect and fully implement the human rights of Inuit and all other Indigenous peoples across the globe.

Throughout her distinguished career, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon has been a powerful advocate for the Arctic, Indigenous Peoples, and international cooperation. Her historic appointment as Canada’s first Indigenous Governor General reflected a lifetime of dedication and hard work, advancing the voices of Inuit. She served as ICC President from 1986 -1992, and prior to that served as ICC Canada Executive Director and ICC Council Member for Canada, where she led the drafting of foundational policies for ICC, including "Principles and Elements of a Comprehensive Arctic Policy" and the award winning "Inuit Regional Conservation Strategy".

As she concludes her service as Canada’s Governor General, we recognize and celebrate the lasting contributions she has made internationally, across Inuit Nunaat, and Canada.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Her Excellency for her commitment and leadership.
