Thank you to our wonderful Ottawa-area volunteer, Nick, for sharing his story and helping to inspire others to get involved.

Nick and his wife are regular Bingo volunteers, event volunteers and supporters of our work.

He has given hundreds of hours to our organization and continues to fundraise for The Kidney Walk each year.

Thank you, Nick.

Nick was only 18 years old and had everything going for him when he received his diagnosis of kidney disease. His life was turned upside down. At 24, he received the long-awaited call that a kidney was waiting for him.

Today – 31 years later – he still has that kidney and wakes up every day with gratitude. One of the things Nick does to show this gratitude is participate in the Kidney Walk. Meeting other people living with kidney disease and transplants, their families and friends, is one of his favourite things about participating in the annual walk.

When Nick was first diagnosed, his mom attended seminars and received invaluable information about living with kidney disease from the Foundation. His dad was also provided with resources. Together, these supports gave their family a better understanding of what they were going through with their teenage son.

Now, Nick gives back not only through participating and fundraising for the Kidney Walk but also volunteers for his local Chapter. “For all the hope, light and understanding they gave me, I feel blessed and so grateful to pass on to others living with kidney disease, a chance to see all the wonderful work The Kidney Foundation of Canada does,” he says.

Thank you to our wonderful partners Ottawa Paramedic Service - Service paramédic d'Ottawaand the dedicated volunteers who helped out at our Loonie and Toonie Drive yesterday at Merival Mall. We raised over $800 for the Ottawa Kidney Walk and spoke to many community members about kidney health and our programs and services.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude for your generosity. Today, we proudly participated in a fundraising initiative for the Kidney Foundation at Merivale Mall, successfully raising more than $800 in support of kidney disease research and services that help improve the lives of those affected by the condition.

As we get closer to our Kidney Walks, we want to take a moment to thank our corporate sponsors.

Today, we are sending our appreciation to Signature Team Realty Ltd for their support of the Pembroke-Renfrew Kidney Walk. It makes a big impact when local businesses help to spread the word. We are grateful.

Sarah was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease in her mid-twenties after routine blood work revealed a rare genetic condition that runs in her family. While the diagnosis was difficult, she was grateful to receive exceptional care from her nephrology team, who helped her manage her condition and preserve her kidney function for many years.

Nearly a decade later, Sarah faced the reality of needing dialysis or a kidney transplant. During the transplant process, Dan volunteered to be her living donor. To their amazement, he was a match. On March 20, 2025, Dan gave Sarah the precious gift of a kidney transplant and a renewed chance at life.

Today, Sarah and Dan are healthy, grateful, and enjoying life to the fullest. Their fundraising efforts are inspired by the support they received throughout their journey and their desire to help other families facing kidney disease.

Funds raised through the Kidney Walk help provide vital patient support programs, research, education, and advocacy for Canadians affected by kidney disease. Together, we can ensure that no one faces kidney disease alone!

Join Sarah and Dan and many others like them, this September at a Kidney Walk near you. Register to join at kidneywalk.ca
