As Canada prepares for FIFA 2026, CCFWE is calling for economic safety to be part of public safety.

Major events bring jobs, visitors, business opportunities, and excitement. But they can also create hidden risks for women, youth, newcomers, workers, and vulnerable communities.

Fake jobs. Fake housing. Fake tickets. Fake contracts. Document abuse. Romance scams. Transportation scams. Financial fraud. Forced labour. Economic control.

These are not small issues. They are financial crime and economic abuse.

No one should be pressured to hand over a passport, share banking information, sign quickly, pay upfront, or work without clear terms.

Real opportunity should never come with fear, pressure, or control.

CCFWE believes a safe FIFA 2026 must protect people, not just stadiums.

Economic safety is public safety.

Our National Economic Justice Banking Taskforce is holding its second meeting of 2026 today, bringing together experts from Canada’s major banks, credit bureaus, regulators, financial advisors, academic institution, lenders, and key partners, including Canada’s investment and securities regulators.

Six years ago, this taskforce was created to identify the critical gaps in banking policy, financial products, and services that continue to harm survivors of economic abuse and people facing financial vulnerability.
What began as a conversation about hidden harm has become a national movement for accountability, safety, and economic justice.
We are deeply grateful to every past and current member of financial institution across Canada who has contributed their expertise, leadership, and commitment to this work. Together, we have helped shift the conversation, influence policy, and open doors that once felt closed in the banking sectors.
The work is not over, but today we honour how far we have come. Thank you all members!

CCFWE’s Policy Lab recently submitted recommendations to Canada’s National Anti-Fraud Strategy, and we’re calling for a framework that reflects survivors’ realities.
Economic abuse and fraud are deeply connected. Yet the current proposed framework lacks a gender-based violence lens. To best protect and support all people in Canada, the framework needs to consider the realities of survivors.

Our submission calls for:

Inclusion of GBV and social services sectors in the Framework
Survivor-led, trauma-informed anti-fraud training for all organizations
Protections to prevent misuse of fraud reporting systems against survivors
Accessible, barrier-free reporting systems for all Canadians

CCFWE is proud to join the 2026 Canadian Finance Summit and Toronto Tech Week, bringing together 800+ C-level and V-level executives from across Canada’s finance, fintech, and banking sectors.

It was wonderful to connect with Excutive leaders from our fintech and banking community, including the Canadian Bankers Association, ,

As fraud, scams, become more sophisticated, AI can help detect risks faster, connect warning signs, identify emerging patterns, and strengthen prevention efforts across the financial sector.

For CCFWE, innovation must also mean protection, especially for vulnerable populations who are disproportionately impacted by fraud and financial harm.

A sincere thank you to the Canadian Lenders Association for inviting and supporting CCFWE. We value our partnership and look forward to continuing to work together to build a safer and more inclusive financial system for all Canadians.
