Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages On June 21, 2019, the Indigenous Languages Act (the Act) became law. The Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages is an independent organization.

The Act responds to Calls to Action 13, 14, and 15 of the 2015 Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The Act recognizes and affirms that Indigenous language rights are Aboriginal rights under the Constitution Act 1982 that must be protected and preserved. The Act establishes an Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages, with a Commissioner and up to three Directors appointed by the Governor in Council. The overarching role of the Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous languages is to help promote Indigenous languages and support the reclamation, revitalization, strengthening, and maintenance of Indigenous languages in Canada. The Commission is not part of the public service nor is it a funding agency.

The Fluency and Immersion Teacher Education Initiative supports the development of Indigenous language immersion teacher education by identifying pathways to educate, train, certify, and accredit immersion teachers, helping build a critical mass of fluent and proficient speakers for future generations.

L’Initiative en matière de maîtrise des langues et de formation d’enseignants spécialisés en immersion soutient le développement de la formation des enseignants en immersion dans les langues autochtones en définissant les voies à suivre pour sensibiliser, former, certifier et accréditer des enseignants en immersion. Elle contribuera ainsi à constituer une masse critique de locuteurs compétents pour les générations futures.

Kickstarter Stream

The Kickstarter Funding Stream supports Indigenous-led initiatives that are building capacity and exploring innovative approaches to Indigenous language reclamation, revitalization, maintenance and strengthening.

Innovation Stream

This stream supports established projects that are creating meaningful change inn Indigenous language education and revitalization.

Funding is available for initiatives that introduce new and innovative approaches or significantly expand and enhance existing innovative projects.

The Commission, in partnership with Canadian Geographic, continues to share the Discovery Language series, highlighting the richness, strength and importance of Indigenous languages.

In “Pitewey and cookies: a Mi’kmaw auntie’s fight to revitalize her language,” writer Jessica-Lee Gagné shares the story of Michelle Sylliboy and her efforts to reclaim, teach and celebrate Mi’kmaw through community, family and everyday life.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, we honour Residential School Survivors, their families and communities, and remember the children who never returned home.

The suppression of Indigenous languages was central to the residential school system, disrupting the passing of language, culture, knowledge and ways of knowing between generations. These impacts continue to be felt today.

Truth must remain at the heart of reconciliation.

En cette Journée nationale de la vérité et de la réconciliation et Journée du chandail orange, nous rendons hommage aux survivants des pensionnats, à leurs familles et à leurs collectivités, et nous nous souvenons des enfants qui ne sont jamais rentrés chez eux.
La suppression des langues autochtones a joué un rôle central dans le système des pensionnats et a perturbé la transmission de la langue, de la culture, des connaissances et des modes de savoir entre les générations. Ces répercussions se font encore sentir aujourd’hui.

La vérité doit rester au cœur de la réconciliation.
