Temporary electronic and household hazardous waste collection sites opening for extreme weather event-related waste

As emergency response efforts continue from the extreme weather event on Wednesday, July 1, the City is providing additional options for affected residents to dispose of extreme weather event-related household hazardous waste and electronic waste (e-waste).

Temporary collection sites will be open for eligible extreme weather event-related household hazardous waste on the following dates:

Saturday, July 11
Monday, July 13
Tuesday, July 14
Wednesday, July 15

At the following locations:

Mary Pitt Centre
100 Constellation Drive – Parking lot
8 am to 4 pm

Lakeview Public School
35 Corkstown Road – Parking lot
8 am to 4 pm

UPDATE: Important Information for Flood-Affected Residents

My office has heard from many residents who were advised by their insurance companies to leave flood-damaged carpets, drywall, furniture, and other materials in place until an adjuster could assess the damage. Some residents have been reluctant to run their air conditioning systems because of concerns about circulating mold, odours, or other contaminants throughout their homes.

This is an important health issue. Water-damaged materials left inside a home can create health risks and may contribute to mold growth.

To provide residents with clear guidance, I contacted the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC). IBC has since advised that if flood-damaged items are dangerous or pose a health hazard, residents should take photographs and document the damage, remove the materials, and then contact their insurance adjuster to advise them that the items have been discarded.

The key message is: Protect your health, document the damage thoroughly, and keep your adjuster informed. If you are concerned about odors, mold, or indoor air quality, contact your insurer or adjuster immediately and discuss the safest path forward.
