Parliamentary Internship Programme - Programme de stage parlementaire 12 interns, 10 months on Parliament Hill | Douze stagiaires, dix mois sur la Colline

Ten young professionals are chosen from among the country’s very best university graduates each year to participate in the ten-month Parliamentary Internship Programme (PIP). Interns work closely with both Government and Opposition MPs, study Parliament, participate in comparative study tours to legislatures across Canada and abroad and prepare an original research paper for the Canadian Political

Science Association. Chaque année, dix jeunes professionnels sont choisis parmi les meilleurs diplômés du pays pour participer au Programme de stage parlementaire de dix mois. Les stagiaires travaillent en étroite collaboration avec des députés du gouvernement et de l’opposition, étudient le Parlement, participent à des voyages d’étude comparative de diverses assemblées législatives au Canada et à l’étranger et rédigent un travail de recherche à l’intention de l’Association canadienne de science politique.

The final event of the PIP year was the 65th Annual Jean-Pierre Gaboury Symposium. The Symposium gave each intern the chance to present their research project that they have been developing throughout the year and to receive feedback.

The Alfred Hales Prize for the best paper from last year’s cohort of interns was also presented. Congratulations to Jesse Lafontaine, recipient of the 2026 Alfred Hales Prize for his paper, “The Impact of Elected Life on the Personal Lives of Members of Parliament.” Congratulations as well to Quinlan Cho and Maya Mohammed, whose papers were shortlisted for the award!

A sincere thank you to the Institute on Governance for its continued support of PIP as a Friend of the Programme, and for its support in making the Symposium possible.

Symposium L’événement de clôture de l’année du PSP a été le 65e Symposium annuel Jean-Pierre Gaboury. Ce symposium a permis à chaque stagiaire de présenter le projet de recherche qu’il ou elle a mené tout au long de l’année et de recevoir des commentaires.

Le prix Alfred Hales, qui récompense le meilleur article de la cohorte de stagiaires de l’année dernière, a également été remis. Félicitations à Jesse Lafontaine, lauréat du prix Alfred Hales 2026 pour son article intitulé « L’impact de la vie politique sur la vie personnelle des députés ». Félicitations également à Quinlan Cho et Maya Mohammed, dont les articles figuraient parmi les finalistes du prix!

At the close of our time on Parliament Hill, we had the immense privilege of meeting with the right honourable Mark Carney, 24th Prime Minister of Canada.

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the Prime Minister for taking the time to speak with us about public service and his vision for our country. An unforgettable meeting as we wrapped up our time with the internship.

What better way to celebrate an unforgettable year with the Parliamentary Internship Programme than at our Annual Spring Luncheon, which took place last month. A sincere thank you to everyone who joined us, especially MPs and staff from across the aisle whose support, mentorship, and encouragement have made this year so meaningful.

A very special thank you to Assistant Deputy Speaker, Alexandra Mendès, for graciously hosting our luncheon, and to Janice Myers, CEO of the Canadian Real Estate Association, for sponsoring the event and supporting the programme. Your generosity helped make this celebration possible. Thank you to everyone who has invested in this year’s cohort. While we all had the chance to work at the seat of the federal government in Ottawa over the past 10 months, it is important that we remember the incredible importance of municipalities. We had the chance to connect and discuss the advocacy priorities of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), a long-time supporter of PIP. While we often consider municipalities as having relationships with provinces, our discussion with the FCM reminded us of the vital role of the relationship between the federal government and municipalities to get projects off the ground and truly support Canadians. We would like to thank the FCM for this invigorating discussion and their continued support of the PIP.

Bien que nous ayons tous eu la chance de travailler au siège du gouvernement fédéral à Ottawa au cours des 10 derniers mois, il est important de ne pas oublier le rôle fondamental des municipalités. Nous avons eu l’occasion d’échanger et de discuter des priorités de représentation de la Fédération canadienne des municipalités (FCM), un fidèle partisan du PIP depuis longtemps. Bien que nous considérions souvent les municipalités comme entretenant principalement des relations avec les provinces, notre discussion avec la FCM nous a rappelé l’importance cruciale de la relation entre le gouvernement fédéral et les municipalités pour concrétiser des projets et véritablement soutenir les Canadiens. Working in Ottawa can sometimes feel like a bubble, yet we want to stay connected with all of Canada. This is where we are incredibly grateful to our amazing sponsors. This week, we had the chance to sit down with representatives from the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) to discuss issues related to the beef industry. This was a unique opportunity to discuss how policy can greatly influence small ranchers across the country and the differences present in a non-supply managed industry. We would like to thank the CCA for their continued support of the program and for helping us better understand their industry!

Travailler à Ottawa peut parfois donner l’impression de vivre dans une bulle, mais nous tenons à rester connectés avec l’ensemble du Canada. C’est pourquoi nous sommes incroyablement reconnaissants envers nos merveilleux commanditaires. Cette semaine, nous avons eu la chance de nous asseoir avec des représentants de l’Association canadienne des bovins (ACB) pour discuter des enjeux liés à l’industrie du bœuf. Ce fut une occasion unique d’aborder la façon dont les politiques peuvent grandement influencer les petits éleveurs à travers le pays, ainsi que les particularités d’une industrie non soumise à la gestion de l’offre. As our time in the Parliamentary Internship Programme comes to an end, we wanted to share our immense appreciation for our host MPs. It takes a lot of confidence in the Programme and our recruitment methods to let the future interns interview you, and have no say in who works in your office! Therefore, thank you to the amazing host MPs of the 2025-2026 cohort! Thank you for welcoming us, for mentoring us and for contributing to our futures. Your commitment to PIP does not go unnoticed. It is thanks to you that more than 550 interns have benefitted from PIP since its creation! 🤝

Alors que notre parcours au Programme de stage parlementaire tire à sa fin, nous souhaitons exprimer notre immense gratitude envers nos députés hôtes. Cela demande beaucoup de confiance envers le Programme et nos méthodes de recrutement que d’accepter de laisser de futurs stagiaires vous rencontrer en entretien, sans avoir votre mot à dire sur la personne qui travaillera dans votre bureau ! Cette semaine, nous avons eu la chance de rencontrer l’honorable Stéphane Dion, une rencontre dont on se souviendra longtemps! Universitaire, homme d’État et diplomate accompli, M. Dion a marqué la vie publique canadienne à titre d’ancien chef du Parti libéral du Canada, de ministre des Affaires étrangères et d’artisan de la Loi sur la clarté. Sa passion pour le Canada, sa vivacité d’esprit et sa franchise ont rendu cet échange aussi stimulant qu’enrichissant. 🌎

What a privilege it was to sit down with the Honourable Stéphane Dion this week! A renowned academic, influential political leader, and accomplished diplomat, Mr. Dion has worn many hats throughout his distinguished career, serving as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and architect of the Clarity Act. His deep commitment to Canada, sharp intellect, and trademark candour made for a conversation that was as engaging as it was memorable. 🌎

Although we’ve spent the last few months on the Hill learning about the political aspects of policymaking, our experience wouldn’t have been complete without learning more about the administrative side of things. Therefore, we had the opportunity yesterday to meet with two senior federal officials who are also PIP alumni: Assistant Deputy Minister Danielle White and Deputy Minister Michael Vandergrift! Ms. White gave us an excellent presentation on titles and rights over Indigenous territories, from the perspective of the Department of Crown-Indigenous Relations. Mr. Vandergrift, for his part, shared his wealth of experience across several government departments, including Health Canada, the Privy Council Office, Transport Canada, and many more! In addition to giving us an exclusive glimpse into the Canadian public service, Mr. Vandergrift and Ms. White are eloquent examples of the remarkable careers which PIPs go on to lead after the completing the programme! 📑📊

Bien que nous ayions passé les derniers mois sur la Colline à découvrir la dimension politique des politiques publiques, notre expérience n’aurait pas été complète sans aussi en apprendre sur leur dimension administrative. Ainsi, nous avons eu la chance hier de rencontrer deux hauts fonctionnaires fédéraux qui sont par ailleurs anciens stagiaires parlementaires: la sous-ministre adjointe Danielle White et le sous-ministre Michael Vandergrift! Mme White nous a donné une excellente présentation sur les titres et les droits sur les territoires autochtones, du point de vue du ministère des Relations Couronne-Autochtones. M. Vandergrift, quant à lui, nous a fait part de sa riche expérience au sein de plusieurs ministères de la fonction publique, tels que Santé Canada, le Bureau du Conseil privé, Transports Canada, et bien d'autres! En plus de nous offrir un aperçu exclusif de la fonction publique canadienne, M. Vandergrift et Mme White sont des exemples éloquents des carrières remarquables que les stagiaires parlementaires entreprennent après avoir complété le programme. 📑📊
