From volunteer parent to valued team member đź’š

Kerry first connected with Trips for Kids Ottawa when her son joined our school bike club. Starting with baking muffins and helping paint the TFKO “office,” she grew into a role supporting all parts of our programs alongside Program Manager Cat Weaver.

From equipment management and volunteer support to community engagement and program coordination, Kerry helps keep TFKO moving forward daily — strengthening the connections that make TFKO special.

Reflecting on what the organization means to her, Kerry shared:

“TFKO is knit into the community it supports, and it’s amazing to be part of that!”

We’re grateful to have Kerry on the TFKO team and excited to share more of her story.

Before a child rides, every bike is checked, tuned, and brought back into service.

Our fleet tune-up is more than maintenance. It’s the process that turns stored equipment into safe, reliable access for youth who depend on it.

Each adjustment, repair, and inspection helps ensure one thing: every rider starts with the same opportunity.

What looks like mechanical work is actually access being built.

Before the first bike ride of the season, something important happens quietly in the background.

Our ride volunteers complete first aid training so every program is supported by people who are ready, prepared, and confident to respond.

This is part of how we build safe, inclusive spaces for youth to explore, learn, and grow through biking.

Every ride starts long before the wheels move.

It starts with people who show up ready.

Winter programs don’t just end. They’re reset with care.

At Kunstadt Sports Kanata, our 96 pairs of skates are sharpened and ready for next season—16 at a time, turned around by the next day. It’s seamless, consistent, and just six minutes away. Without that kind of support, this part of our program becomes a real operational challenge.

Back at our space, gloves, socks, and gear are cleaned, sorted, and inspected. Every detail matters.

This behind-the-scenes work isn’t maintenance for the sake of it. It’s what keeps programs safe, reliable, and ready for the next group of youth stepping onto the ice.

What looks like storage is actually preparation.

Preparation for confidence.
Preparation for belonging.
Preparation for opportunity.

Support—whether through partners like Kunstadt or our broader community—keeps every season running with intention.

This season, over 100 youth registered and were equipped to skate—nearly 60% of whom experienced TFKO for the first time.

With the support of the Johansen Larsen Foundation, WLS Plumbing, , , and Kunstadt Sports, we’re able to remove barriers and ensure that youth have access to the equipment, mentorship, and safe spaces they need to thrive.

What stands out most isn’t just the numbers—it’s the growth:

👉youth trying something new and sticking with it

👉peers supporting peers, naturally stepping into mentorship

👉those powerful moments of “I can do this” happening again and again

We also had the opportunity to create more inclusive spaces—welcoming beginners, reconnecting returning skaters, and offering dedicated sessions for students on the autism spectrum.

This is what it looks like when barriers are removed, and the community shows up.

Thank you to everyone—our volunteers, partners, and supporters—who make this possible. We truly couldn’t do this without you 💛

We’d like to introduce you to Gary Winger.

Gary first connected with Trips for Kids Ottawa through a friend who was already volunteering. He came out to help on an occasional night when extra support was needed—and kept coming back.

Not because he had to, but because he enjoyed it.

For Gary, it’s simple: time on bikes, time outdoors, and sharing that experience with youth who may not otherwise have access.

“It’s a great way to share my love of mountain biking and being out in nature with youth that may not otherwise have that opportunity.”

What stands out most for him are the small moments—like a rider struggling to shift gears due to a language barrier, then suddenly getting it.

“I could see the smile, the light bulb moment as they figured it out.”

Those moments of confidence and understanding are what keep him involved.

“It all helps remind me of the joy and simplicity of being on your bike in nature.”

When asked why others should get involved, Gary doesn’t overthink it:

“Get involved!”

Because showing up means kids get opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have—while spending time on the trails.

“You have the chance as a volunteer to give these kids opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach — all while having fun on your bike in the forest.”

More than 100 youth stepped onto the ice this winter—many for the very first time.

What we witnessed wasn’t just learning to skate.
It was courage in those first uncertain steps.
It was resilience in every fall—and the choice to get back up.
It was leadership, as youth encouraged one another, side by side.
And slowly, confidence and belonging began to take hold.

This is the quiet, powerful work that happens when barriers are removed, and young people are given the chance to try.

We are deeply grateful to the Fondation Rideau Hall Foundation and their Catapult grant for making these experiences possible. Because of this support, we were able to create space—not just for skating—but for connection, growth, and moments that stay with youth long after they leave the rink.

This is what it looks like when we keep showing up for youth—and when others show up with us. 💛

You Are A Leader Who Believes in Potential

You are the kind of business that sees possibilities where others see obstacles.

GEM funding lets youth overcome barriers and discover their skills, courage, and leadership.

Sometimes all it takes is the right support at the right moment.

Thanks to Patinage en forêt, who generously loaned us two adult-sized stabilizers. When Dave Mayer at Patinage en forêt heard that his wooden design with acrylic bottom runners was exactly what TFKO’s team needed to get 2 additional neurodivergent older male teens to experience skating for their first time, Dave said absolutely yes, come pick them up and borrow them for your new skaters. As a result of his generosity, we were able to welcome four neurodivergent boys onto the ice at the indoor arena.

Surrounded by caring volunteers and senior participants, these boys stepped onto the ice with courage—and left with confidence. The kind that comes from being supported, encouraged, and given the space to try.

We’re so excited that they’ll be joining the larger group on our next outing in April.

This is how confidence grows. This is how belonging is built. đź’›
