Tim Joyce, VP of Strategic Partnerships for Canadian Geographic and Executive Producer for Canadian Geographic Films, had the privilege of interviewing Canadian astronaut and Royal Canadian Geographical Society Fellow, Jeremy Hansen at the Canadian Space Agency headquarters in Saint-Hubert, Quebec, on Sunday. Joined by the film’s director, Robert K. Barrett, the interview will be featured in Canadian Geographic’s upcoming documentary on Canada’s iconic Avro Arrow.

When the Avro Arrow program was cancelled in 1958, many of its brilliant engineers went on to join NASA, playing major roles in the development of the Gemini and Apollo programs. From that moment began Canada’s proud legacy of aerospace innovation and space exploration.

dreamMACHINE: The Legend and Legacy of the Avro Arrow is set for completion early this summer and is expected to begin its film festival run early this Fall.

A huge thank you to the Canadian Space Agency for helping make this post-mission sit down with Jeremy possible!

Last week, we welcomed guests to the Alex Trebek Theatre for a screening of Bird Names, a 22-minute documentary from Earth Tones that examines the movement to rename North American bird species named after people.

The film follows a Canadian-led group of birders through the history behind nearly 150 North American bird names, many of which are tied to colonial figures, racism and exclusion in natural history. Through culture, ecology and conservation, Bird Names asks what these names carry forward, and what could change if birds were named in ways that better reflect the species themselves.

Directed by RCGS Fellow Aliya Jasmine and produced by RCGS Fellow Aliza Sovani, the film brings this debate into focus at a time when bird populations are declining and conversations around equity in outdoor spaces remain urgent.

Following the screening, Aliya Jasmine, Aliza Sovani and Tykee James joined Canadian Geographic Editor-in-Chief Alexandra Pope for a Q&A on the making of the film, the politics of naming and the future of bird conservation. The Q&A was followed by a reception, where guests had the chance to connect and continue the conversation.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at 50 Sussex for an evening of film and discussion!

Swans, a Mountain bluebird, a long-billed curlew, and Eurasian collared doves — photographed by Anne Spiers 🐦

Across Canada, this time of year brings a mix of movement. Some birds are still passing through, while others are already present for the season, either returning to breed or staying in place.

Humans have just travelled farther from Earth than ever before. And one of them was Canadian. 🇨🇦 🚀

RCGS Fellow Jeremy Hansen was a mission specialist on NASA's Artemis II, which flew around the Moon and broke the record for the farthest distance any humans have ever travelled from Earth. Surpassing the mark set by Apollo 13 in 1970, they were also the first people to travel beyond low Earth orbit since 1972.

Here, Hansen is pictured at the Orion spacecraft window during the lunar flyby, capturing science imagery of the Moon's surface from just 4,067 miles away.

We are so proud to count him among our Fellows. Congratulations to Jeremy and the entire Artemis II crew! 🌕

Today is Jane Goodall Day, honouring the scientist, conservationist and global advocate who changed how we understand the natural world.

Her research on wild chimpanzees revealed complex social behaviour, intelligence and emotion, reshaping scientific understanding of the relationship between humans and other animals.

A recipient of the RCGS Gold Medal, she was recognized for a lifetime of work that continues to influence conservation efforts worldwide. Through decades of advocacy, Goodall mobilized global action to protect wildlife and habitats, while emphasizing the connection between environmental health and human well-being.

Observed each year on April 3rd, what would have been her birthday, Jane Goodall Day calls on individuals and communities to take action locally and globally.

At the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, that work continues through supporting exploration, research and education that deepen understanding of the world and strengthen efforts to protect it.
