Everyone at The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County is incredibly proud to announce that our CEO Monique Doolittle-Romas has received a commemorative coin in recognition of her leadership in the community!

🏅On August 12, Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe presented Monique with the special coin marking the City of Ottawa’s 200th anniversary. (Ottawa was founded as Bytown in 1826.) 🏅

The city made only 200 coins. Over the course of 2026, each is being handed out to a resident who continues to help make a difference. The gift of this rare coin acknowledges those who give back to their city through leadership, generosity and devotion to community.

She said she was “honoured and humbled” (and surprised!) to be the recipient of one of these coins.

Congratulations, Monique!

Reach out before a challenge becomes a crisis.

The second clip in our series from Rogers tv Ottawa, Cable 22's An Hour to Give carries an important reminder about the importance of finding support and connection.

In this conversation, The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County Board Chair Marilyn Fevrier outlines the support we offer caregivers and people living with dementia. Host Sam Laprade also speaks candidly about the "parallel" nature of the journey faced by people living with dementia and caregivers.

There is no perfect way to navigate dementia. We are all human. No one should have to face it alone.

Watch the second clip, and connect with the Dementia Society early, whether you need guidance now or simply want to understand what support is available.

📅 Also, consider participating in our Walk for Dementia which takes place Sunday September 20. Register and/or donate through the link in the comments below. This year the Dementia Society and presenting sponsors IntegraCare will be celebrating the Walk’s 30th anniversary!

The need is as vast as an NHL-sized rink. And growing.

Earlier this summer, Rogers TV’s An Hour to Give featured The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County.

Host Sam Laprade spoke with Dementia Society leaders, CEO Monique Dollittle-Romas and Board Chair Marilyn Fevrier, as well as board members, dementia care coach Whitney Hale, and client and caregiver Brenda Verdier.

They discussed rising local need and our free services including dementia care coaching, education, support groups, and other community-based programs. Brenda shared her family’s experience, highlighting openness, self-care, and accepting help.

Watch Monique and Sam discuss the scope of the need for the Dementia Society’s services in the attached clip. The full episode is available in the links below.

We also took the opportunity to talk about our upcoming 2026 Walk for Dementia. Kristine McGinn, representing the Walk’s presenting sponsor IntegraCare, joined the appeal to raise $300,000. This free, all-ages event is a community fundraising tradition where friends, family and community come together for a 1 km walk. This year we’re celebrating the Walk’s 30th anniversary!

After a break Monday August 3, the Music and Movement program continues this summer at the Dementia Society Centre!

This in-person program by The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County is conducted in partnership with the uOttawa’s Music and Health Research Institute. It gives participants the chance to learn, feel and express music through playful and dynamic movement activities.

They will move to the music, synchronize body actions with musical rhythms and follow their partner’s movements, as well as follow verbal instructions and musical cues to complete activities.

Expect a mix of structured and improvised activities.

A recent article in the Hospital News explores the benefits of music and mental health and the science behind music and movement.
