After 20 years, the Walk for Dementia made a joyful return to the County of Renfrew last weekend!

Community members, caregivers, families, and people living with dementia gathered in Arnprior Saturday October 17. They walked a scenic one-kilometre route following a path blazing with autumnal colour where the Madawaska River meets the Ottawa.

The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County is grateful to all who joined us, including Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP Billy Denault, who cut the starting ribbon and learned firsthand about our support services that help build a more dementia-friendly Renfrew County.

Our heartfelt thanks to Mark’s No Frills for sponsoring this event. Their keen and enthusiastic crew provided a positive vibe helped ensure the morning unfolded smoothly.

Over $3,500 was raised and will go toward local social, educational and recreational programs supporting caregivers and people living with dementia in Ottawa and across Renfrew County.

Our dedicated staff and volunteers look forward to doing it again in 2027, as does Mark’s No Frills who will sponsor again next year!

Après 20 ans d’absence, la Marche pour la démence a fait un retour triomphal dans le comté de Renfrew la fin de semaine dernière!

Des membres de la collectivité, des aidants naturels, des familles et des personnes atteintes de démence se sont rassemblés à Arnprior le samedi 17 octobre. Ils ont parcouru un parcours pittoresque d’un kilomètre, le long d’un sentier aux couleurs automnales éclatantes, là où la rivière Madawaska se jette dans la rivière des Outaouais.

La Société de la démence d’Ottawa et du comté de Renfrew remercie chaleureusement tous ceux qui se sont joints à nous, notamment Billy Denault, député provincial de Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, qui a coupé le ruban de départ et a pu découvrir par lui-même nos services de soutien visant à faire du comté de Renfrew un endroit plus adapté aux personnes atteintes de démence.

Nous remercions sincèrement le magasin Mark’s No Frills d’Arnprior d’avoir commandité cet événement. Son équipe, dynamique et enthousiaste, a créé une ambiance positive et a contribué au bon déroulement de la matinée.

Plus de 3 500 $ ont été amassés et serviront à financer des programmes sociaux, éducatifs et récréatifs locaux destinés à soutenir les aidants naturels et les personnes atteintes de démence à Ottawa et dans tout le comté de Renfrew.

Notre personnel et nos bénévoles dévoués ont hâte de renouveler l’expérience en 2027, tout comme Mark’s No Frills, qui commanditera à nouveau l’événement l’année prochaine !

It’s not too late to register for Supporting Dementia in Kanata!

This two-part series is designed for caregivers who want to deepen their understanding of dementia and enhance the skills required to support the changing needs of someone living with dementia.

This series also offers participants a safe space in which to talk about their feelings and experiences.

📅Part one provides an overview on dementia including its different stages and effective communication techniques. It’s from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday October 23.

📅Part two focuses on the challenges faced by people living with dementia and how to identify their unmet needs and possible behaviours. It’s from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday October 30.

🎶Find connections through the music of Turquoise! 🎶

This free, twice-weekly online program is part of The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County’s Musical Connections series.

Our energetic program host Sid Ameen leads the group with sing-alongs to new and old favourites. Participants will also make connections by sharing stories and requesting songs.

💛 Make meaningful memories with Daisy on the Go!

This welcoming social program by The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County brings together people living with early to moderate dementia and their caregivers for two hours of connection, fun, and enriching activities across Renfrew County.

From live music and bowling to museum visits, there’s always something enjoyable to experience together.

🕙 Activities run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

🚗 Please note: The program covers entry fees and refreshments, but transportation is not provided.

The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County is celebrating Community Support Month!

Each year, over one million people in Ontario receive help from a charity or non-profit organization. This can mean help with personal care or homemaking, Meals on Wheels, transportation to medical appointments, or caregiver support and dementia-related day programs.

These compassionate and cost-effective services help people live on their own, in their communities, for as long as possible.

Community support reduces the burden on family caregivers and decreases unnecessary hospitalizations. These services ease demand on our health care system.

Each day during October, the Ontario Community Support Association is celebrating a different type of program. Today, October 14, is Respite Services Day. Next week, October 19 to 23, is Adult Day Program week.

La Société de la démence d’Ottawa et du comté de Renfrew célèbre le Mois du soutien communautaire.

Chaque année, plus d’un million de personnes en Ontario reçoivent de l’aide d’un organisme de bienfaisance ou d’un organisme sans but lucratif. Il peut s’agir d’aide aux soins personnels ou aux tâches ménagères, du programme « Repas à domicile », du transport vers les rendez-vous médicaux, ou encore de soutien aux proches aidants et de programmes de jour liés à la démence.

Ces services, offerts avec compassion et à un coût raisonnable, aident les gens à vivre de façon autonome, au sein de leur communauté, aussi longtemps que possible.

Le soutien communautaire allège le fardeau des aidants naturels et réduit les hospitalisations inutiles. Ces services soulagent la pression exercée sur notre système de santé.

Chaque jour du mois d’octobre, l’Association ontarienne de soutien communautaire met en vedette un type de programme différent. Aujourd’hui, le 14 octobre, c’est la Journée des services de répit. La semaine prochaine, du 19 au 23 octobre, c’est la semaine des programmes de jour pour adultes.

Everyone at The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County enters this weekend deeply grateful for all those who joined us September 20 for the 30th Walk for Dementia.

This year’s milestone anniversary was made possible by the tremendous efforts of our staff, a host of enthusiastic volunteers, and the steadfast support of our sponsors, including Integracare, presenting sponsor of this year’s Walk for Dementia.

We’ve raised more than $297,000 toward our $300,000 goal. Every dollar stays local, supporting dementia care coaching and social, recreational and educational programs. It’s not too late!

💛 Stop by and say hello to Trish!

We’re happy to welcome Trish from the Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County to our store today! She’s set up in our lobby until 3 PM, sharing information about the programs and services the Society offers and accepting donations to support individuals and families affected by dementia.

We’re also incredibly proud to be partnering with the Dementia Society to bring the Walk for Dementia back to Renfrew County for the first time in over 20 years on Saturday, October 17th!

The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County presents Arabian Tunes, an online Musical Connections program from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday October 7.

Musician Sam Himmat conducts this two-hour online session performing a wide variety of old and new popular Arabic songs from all around the Arab countries.
Note: The music and presentation are in Arabic.

Arabian Tunes is part of the Dementia Society’s Musical Connections series. Musical Connections programs are designed to provide an opportunity for people living with dementia and their friends and family to experience a live, in-person or virtual musical performances.

In October, The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County is launching support groups designed strictly for caregivers of people living with dementia.

Meet other caregivers in a welcoming and supportive space. A Care Coach and a trained volunteer lead the group, support open discussion, and share useful, up-to-date resources.

These support groups are for caregivers who can attend without the person they care for (i.e., there is no separate program offered at the same time for people living with dementia during the sessions).

Groups are offered at the Dementia Society Centre on St. Laurent Blvd, as well as in Kanata and in Orléans.

The Kanata session this month is full but there are still spaces available at the Dementia Centre (10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday October 8 ) and in Orléans at the Aline-Chrétien Health Hub (10 a.m. to noon Thursday October 22).

En octobre, la Société de la démence d’Ottawa et du comté de Renfrew lancera des groupes de soutien destinés exclusivement aux proches aidants de personnes vivant avec la démence.

Venez rencontrer d’autres proches aidants naturels dans un milieu accueillant et solidaire. Un accompagnateur en soins et un bénévole formé animent le groupe, favorisent les discussions ouvertes et partagent des ressources utiles et à jour.

Ces groupes de soutien s’adressent aux proches aidants qui peuvent y participer sans la personne dont ils s’occupent (c’est-à-dire qu’aucun programme distinct n’est offert en même temps aux personnes atteintes de démence pendant les séances).

Les groupes se tiennent au Centre de la Société de la démence, sur le boulevard Saint-Laurent, ainsi qu’à Kanata et à Orléans.

La séance de Kanata de ce mois-ci est complète, mais il reste des places disponibles au Centre de la démence (de 10 h à 11 h 30, le jeudi 8 octobre) et à Orléans, au Centre de santé Aline-Chrétien (de 10 h à midi, le jeudi 22 octobre).
