J’ai fait mon coming out en tant que bisexuelle au secondaire, et tout le monde autour de moi est passé à autre chose comme si je n’avais rien dit.

Alors j’ai tout gardé pour moi. Je sortais avec des garçons parce que c’est ce que tout le monde attendait de moi. Pendant des années, je me suis demandé si j’étais simplement perdue.

Puis, une femme que je connaissais à peine m’a invitée à prendre un café.

J’étais terrifiée.

Ce café est devenu bien plus qu’un café. Sept ans plus t**d, je l’ai épousée.

Voici la suite de ma lettre à mon moi plus jeune. Elle parle de ma femme, auprès de qui je me sens chez moi, de la famille choisie qui remplit notre vie d’amour, et de ce que j’ai enfin compris : je mérite tout ça.

Si on t’a déjà dit que tu ne savais pas ce que tu voulais : c’était faux. Tu avais seulement besoin d’espace pour te découvrir.

Ose les paillettes. Aime haut et fort. Tiens bon.

At 21, I was still figuring it out. If I could send that version of me a letter, this is what I’d say.

Coming out isn’t one moment. You do it again and again, and you get better at it.

AIDS took many of the mentors my generation needed. Find the ones who are still here, and then become one.

Your timeline is yours: now, at university, at 21, or later. You’re not behind.

To parents and caregivers: your kid is listening. If you’re ready to fight for them, let them know.

J’ai grandi dans une petite ville du Sri Lanka, convaincue d’être la seule personne gaie au monde. Je ne l’étais pas.

Voici ma lettre à mon moi plus jeune. Elle parle de la peur de décevoir ma famille, de mon grand-père, qui m’a donné de la force, et de ma mère, devenue ma plus grande alliée. Elle parle aussi du jour où je suis arrivée à une réunion de famille aux côtés de ma femme.

À chaque jeune 2ELGBTQI+ d’origine sud-asiatique qui cache encore son amour : nous sommes bien plus que tu ne l’imagines.

Aux familles : être q***r ne détruit ni la famille ni la culture. Chaque famille qui choisit l’amour ouvre la voie à l’enfant qui viendra après.

Dear younger me: you get to be a girl dad. And it’s the best.

This is my letter to my younger self. It’s about the daughter who made me a dad, the beard I was promised (it delivered), and the peace that came with finally living as myself.

Living authentically gave me a backbone I never had. If you’re standing at the edge, wondering whether to take that leap of faith: you’re going to be great.

Au jeune Elliot que j’étais : tu auras la chance d’être papa d’une fille. Et c’est le meilleur rôle du monde.

Voici ma lettre à mon moi plus jeune. Elle parle de ma fille, qui a fait de moi un papa, de la barbe qu’on m’avait promise (promesse tenue) et de la paix que j’ai trouvée en étant enfin pleinement moi-même.

Vivre de façon authentique m’a donné de la colonne. Je n’en avais jamais eu. Si tu hésites encore à faire le grand saut : tu vas être formidable.

I came out as bisexual in high school, and everyone around me moved on as if I hadn't said anything at all.

So I tucked it away. I dated boys because that's what everyone expected. For years, I wondered if I was just confused.

Then a woman I barely knew asked me to go for coffee.

I was terrified.

I am sharing my story as part of Coming Out Day (tomorrow) to help others who may be feeling the same feelings. Part 2 can be found in the previous post.

That coffee became something much bigger than coffee. Seven years later, I married her.

This is the rest of my letter to my younger self. It's about the woman who feels like home, the chosen family who fills our life with love, and finally believing I deserve all of it.

To anyone who was once told they were just confused: you weren't. You just needed the space to figure yourself out.

Wear the glitter. Love loudly. Keep holding on.

À 21 ans, j’hésitais encore. Si je pouvais écrire une lettre à cette version de moi, voici ce que je lui dirais.

Le coming out, ce n’est pas un seul moment. Tu le fais encore et encore, et ça devient chaque fois un peu plus facile.

Le sida a emporté bon nombre des mentors dont ma génération avait besoin. Trouve ceux qui sont encore là, puis deviens mentor à ton tour.

Ton parcours t’appartient : maintenant, à l’université, à 21 ans ou plus t**d. Tu n’es pas en ret**d.

Aux parents et aux familles : votre enfant écoute la façon dont vous parlez des gens qui lui ressemblent. Si vous êtes là pour vous battre à ses côtés, faites-le-lui savoir.

I grew up in a small town in Sri Lanka, sure I was the only gay person in the world. I wasn't.

This is my letter to my younger self. It's about the fear of disappointing my family, the grandfather who gave me strength, and the mother who became my biggest cheerleader. It's also about the day I walked into a family gathering beside my wife.

To every South Asian kid still hiding who they love: there are more of us than you can imagine.

To families: being q***r doesn't destroy family or culture. Every family that chooses love makes it easier for the next child.
