As part of our 20th anniversary celebration in 2026, we’re sharing 20 of our favourite moments at O-YA over the past two decades.

✨ Moment #8: O-YA’s First Block Party ✨

📸 The Moment:
In 2016, youth at O-YA’s Leadership Camp took on the Councillors Challenge to come up with the best way to celebrate Canada 150. What started as one big community celebration became O-YA’s very first Block Party in 2017 — and quickly turned into a yearly tradition! 🎉

That very first Block Party was packed with activities and community fun, including Fries for Charity, a sidewalk chalk competition, live music from the Trevor Alguire Band, a baking contest, henna tattoos, outdoor chess picnic tables, oyster shucking, and so much more. It was a day full of creativity, connection, and community spirit that helped shape what the Block Party has become today.

💙 Why It Matters:
The Block Party represents what O-YA is all about — youth leadership, community connection, and creating spaces where everyone feels welcome. What began as a youth-driven idea grew into an event that brings together families, neighbours, local organizations, and youth of all ages each summer.

For 20 years, O-YA has been creating safe spaces, meaningful programs, and lasting connections for youth in our community. This moment is just one of many that tell our story.

👉 Follow along as we count down 20 moments from 20 years of O-YA.

🎈 And speaking of Block Parties… this year’s O-YA Block Party is THIS SATURDAY, June 13 from 11 AM – 2 PM! We can’t wait to celebrate with the community once again 💙

As part of our 20th anniversary celebration in 2026, we’re sharing 20 of our favourite moments at O-YA over the past two decades.

✨ Moment #7: CRAVE: Get Moving ✨

📸 The Moment:
As part of O-YA’s CRAVE: Get Moving program, Inuit Cultural Performer Heidi Langille and her partner delivered an incredible cultural dance performance for the Osgoode community. The program brought together 12 professional dancers who each hosted culturally diverse dance sessions for both youth-only groups and the broader community. Throughout the program, dancers shared the history and cultural significance of their dance styles, spoke about their countries of origin, demonstrated their talents, and taught participants a few moves of their own. Dance styles included Bollywood, Egyptian, Salsa, Chinese dance, Hip Hop, and more. CRAVE: Get Moving was proudly funded by the City of Ottawa.

💙 Why It Matters:
This moment reflects O-YA’s commitment to celebrating diversity, encouraging cultural learning, and creating opportunities for young people to connect through movement and shared experiences. Programs like CRAVE: Get Moving helped youth explore new cultures, build confidence, and experience the power of community through dance, music, and storytelling.

For 20 years, O-YA has been creating safe spaces, meaningful programs, and lasting connections for youth in our community. This moment is just one of many that tell our story.

👉 Follow along as we count down 20 moments from 20 years of O-YA.
