Member Spotlight Series: Meet William van Geest!
Executive Director of Ecology Ottawa

When William moved to Ottawa, he was eager to work in policy development.

He nevertheless felt pulled toward municipal advocacy, leading him first to volunteer in sustainable transportation, and later to join Ecology Ottawa, where he is now the Executive Director. He is dedicated to advocating for a better, more sustainable Ottawa.

William started at Ecology Ottawa in 2022 as a Program Coordinator and became the Executive Director in 2024. A non-profit that advocates for municipal ecology, their work can be summed up by the slogan: striving to “make Ottawa the green capital of Canada,” and is achieved through three program streams: climate, nature and people. Their programs include pollinator gardens, 15 minute neighbourhoods, electric school buses, youth sustainability programs, and more. The organization also works with councillors and committees and has been impactful in Ottawa’s policy decisions.

William has built a team of advocates and is constantly inspired by their energy and passion to drive change. Working with the community supporting Ecology Ottawa’s campaigns has been a highlight of his career.

Ecology Ottawa chose Impact Hub Ottawa (IHO) as their workspace in 2021, and the team values the friendly staff, community, and many events. William appreciates IHO’s flexibility that meets their work and meeting needs, and feels IHO’s commitment to the SDGs is important and attracts like-minded organizations. Another benefit is the connections and collaborations with others like EnviroCentre , which has provided funding to some of Ecology Ottawa’s programming.

William is another passionate changemaker at IHO. Him and his teams are a part of what makes our space so vibrant and exciting.

Thank you, William and your team, for the hard work and dedication to making Ottawa a greener, safer capital city.

Member Spotlight Series: Meet Tyler Farrow, Standards Manager at Alliance for Water Stewardship!

Working in water has led Tyler all over the world.

During an internship in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Tyler was exposed to water insecurity firsthand. The experience led him to further his studies and devote his career to sustainable and equitable water management.

Since 2021, Tyler has worked at the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS), which is both a multi-stakeholder membership alliance and a voluntary sustainability standard system for responsible water use. As Standards Manager, Tyler leads the development of standards and guidance for water stewardship. His work is highly aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6): Clean Water and Sanitation for All.

One accomplishment Tyler is proud of is his work on the recently published AWS Standard Version 3.0, which produced a more accessible, practical, and impactful set of criteria and requirements for private sector water users.

Tyler has been a member at Impact Hub Ottawa for 4 years and is drawn to the membership flexibility and the special sense of community, which feels different from other co-working spaces he has visited. With Impact Hub Ottawa’s commitment to the UN SDGs and many other members working in sustainability, he found it appealing to spend his days in a mission-driven space with others who share his values. He appreciates the knowledge-sharing and networking from the many events and interactions with other members.

With over 550 members working across many sectors as ‘changemakers’ we applaud their work and thank them for being part of our community at Impact Hub Ottawa.

Thank you, Tyler, for the important work you are doing for water stewardship!

Member Spotlight Series: Meet Jane Porter, Co-Founder of Impact Hub Ottawa and Bridge Building Group!

‘Doing good better’ has been a central theme in Jane’s career.

After experiencing global Impact Hubs, Jane and five others ignored the skepticism and worked countless hours on top of their full-time jobs to launch Impact Hub Ottawa (IHO) as a member of the global network, following its mission dedicated to social impact.

In 2021, Jane started Bridge Building Group to help organizations move forward together through strategic insight, expert facilitation, and thoughtful gatherings. Working across sectors including Indigenous rights, health, education, climate, and natural resources, the team, including her business partner Melissa Hammell, supports clients with strategy, retreats, coaching, and facilitation. Examples of projects include developing a food security strategy in Nunavik, supporting strategic planning for clients such as Nature Canada and Ashbury College, and facilitating leadership retreats for organizations across Canada.

Jane made our space her team’s home, and believes IHO is a powerful meeting place for people across sectors, through its programs, events, and community. She feels its mission-aligned approach attracts all kinds of interesting people and facilitates a strong network, allowing for collaboration and partnerships, including a few that blossomed between Bridge Building Group and other Hub members.

Jane’s story kicks off our Impact Hub Ottawa Member Spotlight Series. Stay tuned – over the coming weeks, we’ll introduce more of our inspiring members who make our community of changemakers at Impact Hub Ottawa.

Thank you, Jane, for being part of our community.

Exploring AI: What does AI mean for knowledge management?

May 22, 2026 | 3:30-5:00 PM | Impact Hub Ottawa

The saying “knowledge is power” reflects the central role of knowledge and knowledge work in many different spheres of human life. The ability of AI engines to work with increasingly sophisticated forms of knowledge is driving much of the transformation we’re experiencing in the current “AI Boom”. At the same time, managing the impact of AI on the quality of knowledge is top-of-mind for many. In this Exploring AI we’ll consider and discuss how AI engines will interact with knowledge access, work and practices.

Our end-of-session presenters will be Leslie Santibañez and Peter Cowan, two senior knowledge and information management specialists currently developing an AI application for tacit knowledge management support.

Exploring AI is a member-led discussion and peer-learning circle at Impact Hub Ottawa. Whether you’re curious or concerned about AI, already using it in your work, or just want to better understand its impact, we invite you to join in and please feel free to bring a friend or colleague. No technical experience is required to participate!
