At Connected Canadians, we see the meaningful impact that happens when people of all ages share stories, skills, and time, especially through technology. These moments reduce isolation, build confidence, and strengthen our communities.

Meet Scott, Connected Canadians’ Volunteer of the Month. 💫

Scott is a great example of the volunteers who make CC so special, people from all kinds of backgrounds and careers who generously share their professional experience, leadership, and skills simply to help others in the community.

He first joined CC through his Community Service Learning placement at University of Ottawa and continued volunteering long after completing his required hours. Outside of volunteering, he is also the proud owner of the Bulk Barn on Carling Ave., which he has operated for over 13 years.

As Scott shared, “Hearing at each session how valuable and meaningful this service has been to older Canadians’ daily lives is what makes the experience so fulfilling for me.”

We’re so grateful for your dedication, Scott, and for the difference you continue to make in the lives of older adults through digital inclusion.

If you are ever in the Carling Ave. area, make sure to stop by and say hi. We hear the chocolate-covered almonds are his specialty. 😉

We were proud to recognize and celebrate our incredibly hard-working volunteers making a real difference for older adults.

The event brought together mentors in our Newcomer Mentorship Program and older adults to recognize the impact they are making together through one-on-one support, learning, and connection.

National Volunteer Week was a great reminder of the impact volunteers make all year long, helping older adults stay connected and build confidence with technology. One mentor alone has supported more than 50 older adults through one to one sessions.

This year’s award recipients:
• Joy Ajuluchukwu – Community Anchor Award
• Marcel Briaud Wafo Tchoupe – Community Impact Award
• Kingatsa Rahantarivola – Client Impact Award
• Gabriela Alam – Innovation in Mentorship Award
• Imed Cherabi – Excellence in Mentorship Award
• Djamila Benabbes – Alumni Mentor Award
• Fadi Bitar – Alumni Mentor Award

Through each session, mentors help older adults navigate everyday technology, from staying in touch with loved ones to accessing important services, while building connection and community.

We’re especially grateful for the mentors and to TD who make this work possible.

We’re thrilled to welcome Shannon Cummings as our new Director of Development & Communications at Connected Canadians!

Shannon will lead our fundraising and donor engagement work and oversee communications to ensure we clearly share the impact of our programs across the country.

Another great day at Perley Health, where Connected Canadians brought together volunteers from Adobe to support older adults with one to one tech help.

Together, we spent the morning working one to one with older adults, building confidence with everyday tech, from email and video calls to navigating the web.

Connected Canadians is all about meeting people where they are and helping them feel more comfortable, capable, and connected.

During the session, we also delivered a Social Engineering Awareness workshop, developed with support from Desjardins, focused on recognizing common scams, protecting personal information, and navigating the digital world with confidence.

Thank you to our Adobe volunteers for showing up with energy and care, and to Desjardins for helping make this workshop possible.

You’re dead. Now what happens to your online accounts?

In Ottawa, we brought older adults together to talk about something many people avoid: what happens to our digital lives, and how we can make things easier for the people we care about.

Despite the seriousness of the topic, it was an upbeat, energizing morning, with practical, honest, and supportive discussions. Many stayed after for one-on-one help, working through their own devices and next steps.

Thank you to Arbor Memorial Inc., including Kelly Funeral Homes and Capital Funeral Home & Cemetery, for helping make this important conversation accessible.

Volunteering with Connected Canadians is about more than digital literacy workshops. It’s about helping older adults navigate everyday digital challenges, from staying in touch with loved ones to accessing online services.

Each session, our mentors help build connection and independence for older adults.

“I always feel better with the knowledge I gain from Connected Canadians volunteers. We are so fortunate to have this opportunity to build confidence and feel more comfortable using technology. I feel confident with this trusted source of learning.” - Joy, CC Client, London ON

We recently had a chance to celebrate our mentors. We’ll be sharing a few moments from that celebration in upcoming posts.
