🇺🇦 Today, we highlight the story of Ukrainian political prisoner Andrii Kuliievych from occupied Crimea, Ukraine.

📢 Born on April 22, 2000, Andriy is a Ukrainian citizen who lived in Sevastopol. He worked as a construction laborer before his arrest. In 2020, Andriy and three other activists distributed leaflets in public places calling for political change in Russia. Russian security services later accused them of preparing a public explosion and brought multiple terrorism-related charges against the group.

⚖️ Andriy was sentenced to 7.5 years in a penal colony on charges related to alleged terrorism, explosives, weapons distribution, and public advocacy. His case is part of a broader pattern of politically motivated prosecutions in occupied Crimea.

🔒 As of the end of 2025, Andriy remains imprisoned in Penal Institution No. 2 in Yeniseysk, Krasnoyarsk Krai, thousands of kilometers away from his home and loved ones.

❗ We call for the immediate release of Andriy Kuliievych. No one should be imprisoned for their political views, activism, or peaceful expression.

On Friday May 29th, SUSK had the honor of attending the Canada-Ukraine Foundation 30th Anniversary Gala in Toronto.

We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to CUF, and especially to Executive Director Valeriy Kostyuk, for inviting our team to be a part of the celebration of 30 years of Canadian generosity and humanitarian action for Ukraine.

A true highlight of the evening was the powerful conversation on democracy, power, and identity featuring guest of honor Margaret Atwood, moderated by Canada’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Natalka Cmoc. Hearing from such influential voices was incredibly inspiring.

We are deeply grateful for CUF’s ongoing leadership and for their continued dedication to providing Ukraine with humanitarian and financial aid. 🇨🇦🇺🇦

Following our advocacy, we have received a response from the University of Toronto.

There has been progress.

Current students:
Current UofT students who have already been granted international fee exemptions under CUAET will remain eligible for domestic tuition rates for the duration of their degrees.

Incoming students (this year):
Students accepted this year under the expectation of domestic tuition fees will be eligible for a one-year exemption only (2026–2027).

New students (from Summer 2027 onwards):
These students will not be eligible for a fee exemption under this policy.

While this is a step in the right direction, it is not a complete solution.

Ukrainian students are not making one-year decisions. They are building their futures in Canada.

With the federal government extending CUAET measures, it is clear these circumstances are ongoing. A one-year window does not provide the stability needed to confidently pursue a full degree.

We will continue advocating for long-term, sustainable solutions at both the university and provincial levels.

In the meantime, we need continued pressure.

Today, April 10, marks Crimean Tatar Journalism Day—commemorating the 1883 launch of Tercüman, the first Crimean Tatar newspaper founded by Ismail Gasprinsky and grounded in the idea: “Unity in language, thought, and action.”
More than a century later, this legacy of truth-telling is still under attack.
For over 12 years, Crimea has been under illegal Russian occupation. Independent media has been dismantled, and journalists who report on repression face raids, fabricated charges, torture, and long prison sentences.
At least 21 Crimean journalists and civic reporters remain imprisoned today—many in critical health.
Their stories reflect a broader reality in occupied Crimea:
• Over 200 political prisoners
• Religious and cultural persecution
• Forced displacement of Ukrainian children
• Ongoing resistance despite the risks
We must not stay silent.
