This past weekend, the 2026–2027 SUSK Board of Directors met in Toronto for the annual planning session.

From advocating for Ukraine’s victory and strengthening our communities to unlocking new professional development opportunities and ensuring SUSK’s longevity, we are ready to make this year count.

Today, August 19, is the birthday of Appaz Kurtamet - a Crimean Tatar political prisoner and one of the youngest people on the list of Ukraine’s political prisoners.

Appaz is currently held in Penal Colony No. 6 in Sosnovy Bor, Pskov region, Russia, after being transferred from Vladimir Central Prison.

He turns 24 today, behind bars.

We remember him, we speak out, and we demand his freedom.

International Youth Day is a reminder that young people are not simply the leaders of tomorrow, they are making a difference today!

Across the world, young people bring fresh ideas, creativity, energy, and new perspectives to the challenges facing our communities. Their voices deserve to be heard, their ideas supported, and their opportunities to learn, create, and participate valued.

As SUSK, we are proud to be part of a community that connects and empowers Ukrainian Canadian youth, encouraging them to stay engaged, build connections, and contribute to the future of their communities.

Happy World Embroidery Day!

Today is celebrated to embrace the beauty of embroidery with every colour, pattern, story, and tradition woven into every stitch. From Scandinavian folk art to Ukrainian vyshyvanka and embroidery traditions from around the world, embroidery has long been a way for people to express their culture, pass down knowledge.

To create something meaningful by hand is a reminder to slow down to enjoy the creative process, and share the craft we love with others. Whether you are continuing a family tradition, working on a new project, learning a new stitch, or simply admiring the incredible work of others, there is so much to celebrate!

July 22 marks the anniversary of the detention of Appaz Kurtamet

Appaz Kurtamet, a young Crimean Tatar from Ukraine, was abducted by Russian occupying forces in 2022 and later illegally sentenced to 7 years in prison on fabricated charges.

Before his detention, he lived in Ukraine, worked in IT, volunteered, and helped preserve Crimean Tatar language and culture.

His story is one of many reminders that Russia continues to imprison Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars for their identity, values, and resistance.

We remember, we speak out, and we demand freedom for Appaz Kurtamet.

Ukrainian Statehood Day was established by a presidential decree on August 24, 2021. The holiday was introduced following an initiative by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who announced it during the celebrations for the 30th
anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.

Today is to recognize the continuity of Ukrainian statehood from the era of Kyivan Rus to present-day independent Ukraine. It highlights that Ukraine’s history as a state extends back more than a thousand years, rather than beginning with its independence in 1991.

SUSK strongly condemns the International Olympic Committee’s decision to provisionally reinstate the Russian Olympic Committee.

At a time when Ukrainian civilians, athletes, students, and communities continue to suffer from Russia’s full-scale aggression, any move that normalizes Russia’s return to international sport is unacceptable.

The Olympic movement claims to stand for peace, dignity, and respect. These values must include justice, accountability, and solidarity with Ukraine.

Celebrated on July 7, Ivana Kupala honoured Kupalo, the spirit of the summer sun. Later on the festival was associated with Ivan (John the Baptist) as Christianity spread, giving rise to the name Ivan Kupala.

The celebration is filled with symbolizing love, renewal, purification, and the connection between people and nature. Traditions include weaving flower wreaths and floating them on water, singing, gathering with communities, and lighting bonfires to leap over as a symbol of strength, protection, and good fortune!

Ukraine continues to lose lives to Russia’s genocidal war while parts of the world continue to celebrate and normalize Russia on the global stage.

On July 1, 2026, two Russian individuals displayed a pro-peace banner atop the Empire State Building in New York City. Less than 24 hours later, Russia launched one of the largest attacks on Kyiv since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

The overnight drone and missile attack killed at least 30 people and injured 91 others. Kyiv’s mayor described it as the “most massive attack” on the Ukrainian capital to date.

This contrast is difficult to ignore. While parts of the West continue to romanticize, celebrate, or separate “culture” from politics, Russia continues to launch missiles and drones at civilians.

Every attempt to whitewash Russia’s image helps obscure the reality of Russia’s ongoing genocidal war against Ukraine and the daily terror inflicted on Ukrainian cities.

Ukraine does not have the luxury of forgetting. The world should not have the luxury of looking away.
