Palliative care is not only about end-of-life care. It is about improving quality of life, supporting dignity, and ensuring long-term care residents and families receive compassionate care.

That’s why we, alongside our partners, are calling for federal investment in a National Palliative Care Training Standard for Long-Term Care to help strengthen palliative care training and workforce support across Canada’s long-term care sector.

Today, Pallium Canada, alongside our partners, are calling for federal investment in a National Palliative Care Training Standard for Long-Term Care.

Every long-term care resident deserves com-passionate, high-quality care that reflects their goals, comfort, and dignity. Supporting frontline workers with accessible, role-based -tiveCare training will help strengthen workforce confidence, improve resident and family experience, and support better outcomes across Canada’s long-term care system.

A coordinated national standard would help ensure providers across Canada have access to the training, tools and workforce sup-port needed to provide compassionate care when it matters most.

Too many Canadians continue facing barriers to accessing high quality, compassionate palliative care. Understanding where those gaps exist is a critical first step toward closing them.

That’s why we are building the Canadian Atlas of Palliative Care. Last year, we launched the first provincial editions for Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, which have provided health planners, policymakers, and communities with a clearer picture of how palliative care is delivered and accessed in those provinces. And we’re just getting started.

Improving starts with understanding where we stand. Explore the Canadian Atlas of Palliative Care today: https://buff.ly/ybmc2kd

Caregiving takes a toll on caregivers’ wellbeing. The more time spent caregiving, the more tired, overwhelmed, and isolated they become.

Atlas CareMaps offer a simple, visual way to begin helping with that. By mapping out caregiver networks, we can identify strengths, uncover gaps, and have more meaningful conversations about support.

On May 19 at 9:30 a.m. ET, join the next free session of our Atlas CareMap series to see how Atlas CareMaps work and how they can spark clearer conversations about connection, awareness, and the realities caregivers face every day. This workshop is presented with support from the Rexall Care Network.

Palliative care is a team effort, and PSWs and care aides are often at the heart of the day-to-day support patients and families rely on. In those moments, having something clear and easy to use can help them feel more confident.

The new Palliative Care Handbook for Personal Support Workers and Care Aides was created with that in mind. This mobile-friendly guide brings together practical information for real-world palliative care situations, tailored to different roles and regions, helping to support consistent, confident, and compassionate care.

What do you say when a patient asks, “What should I expect?”

Moments like these aren’t always easy, and many care providers feel unprepared to lead these conversations, especially when emotions are high and time is limited.

Our Canadian Serious Illness Conversations Course helps build the skills and confidence to approach these discussions with clarity, compassion, and purpose. Through a blend of online learning and a facilitated workshop, including guided practice and role play exercises, it helps strengthen your ability to lead meaningful conversations with patients and families.
