SCAN OTTAWA HAD A VERY BUSY AND GRATIFYING DAY AT CAFÉS’ GREEN FAIR YESTERDAY! Thanks to all our volunteers and all the members of the public who signed the World-Changing Kids petition in support of the Kebaoek fighting storage of radioactive waste at chalk River and for signing a postcard for their MP insisting on real climate action

🥵 Let's talk about extreme heat in schools -- and what we can do about it!

On Monday, June 15, join For Our Kids' Schools Working Group for evening of story-telling, connection, and learning.

With only a few more weeks of school left, it's a good time to come together to celebrate your accomplishments this past year, meet other parents who are taking school climate actions, and brainstorm ideas for future school actions.

We will be joined by Jackie McVicar, Atlantic Canada Organizer with For Our Kids, to talk about extreme heat in schools and the For Our Kids “Hot Schools, Cool Solutions” () campaign. Jackie will be sharing her experiences and learnings with extreme heat in Nova Scotia.

This is a space to ask questions, share your own school's challenges, and find a supportive network of parents doing the same work across the country. Grab a tea, hop on, and let’s grow this movement together. Kids and pets are welcome!

Date: Monday, June 15th, 2026
Time: 4:00 PM PT | 5:00 PM MT | 6:00 PM CT | 7:00 PM ET | 8:00 PM AT

As DeSmog wrote in 2025: "Equinor has retracted a claim that it stores about a million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually at its flagship carbon capture project after DeSmog obtained data showing the real figure was as little as a tenth of that amount."

Here is Canada, despite the huge profits of oil and gas corporations, we are still considering spending more public money to finance carbon capture and storage.

And Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is also dangerous locally, as Aly Hyder Ali pointed out for Environmental Defence (see link below for sources):

"Transporting the captured carbon requires a network of high-pressure pipelines, which can and have exploded in the past. In 2020, a pipeline rupture in Mississippi sent 45 people to the hospital and required hundreds of people to be evacuated.

There are also risks to groundwater aquifers, which could be contaminated if leakage occurs. In Canada, these risks disproportionately impact Indigenous communities.... CCS is incredibly costly and inefficient – it requires billions of dollars in subsidies for minimal emissions reductions. It is not a new technology – CCS has been around for over 50 years and has consistently failed to live up to expectations.
.. Furthermore, most of the (small amount) of captured carbon is ultimately used for digging up more oil and gas."

Polling shows strong support for a renewable energy transition in Canada instead:

58% of Canadians say transitioning away from fossil fuels toward renewable energy is more important than ever, in light of U.S. aggression toward other countries [only 11% say less]: https://www.sierraclub.ca/clean-energy-polling-canada/

7 out of 10 Canadians support regulations to limit oil and gas corporations’ greenhouse gas emissions. Alberta also sees a strong majority (62%) in favour of such regulations and only 20% opposed.

And Canadians, including Albertans, wanted a stronger, faster industrial carbon pricing system: https://www.sierraclub.ca/polling-industrial-carbon-pricing/

Additionally, “70% of the public would feel pride if Canada were to become a renewable energy superpower, versus only 30 percent feeling that way about becoming an oil and gas superpower…. These results include a majority of Albertans (56 per cent) and 79% of people living in Newfoundland and Labrador.” - More here: https://www.sierraclub.ca/lng-national-interest-canada/
