Ottawa Asian Heritage Month Society Every May, the Ottawa Asian Heritage Month Society coordinates an extravaganza of cultural events in Ottawa, Ontario.

In July 2004, the Ottawa Asian Heritage Month Society (OAHMS) was established to organize and coordinate local AHM activities. Throughout May, there will be dozens of events including dance, sports, music, films, exhibitions, literary readings, seminars, cooking demonstrations and much, much, more!

May 31 Thursday Turkish Film: Allah’ın Sadık Kulu: Barla (Devoted Servant of God: Barla)

This animated feature film takes the audiences back to the years prolific Islamic scholar, Bediüzzaman Said Nursi, spent in Barla, a remote village located in the mountains of Isparta province where he wrote important sections of the Risale-i Nur -- a 14-volume commentary on the Quran. The movie recounts Nursi’s years in Barla through the eyes of a boy named Mustafa, the single fictional character in the movie. (Turkish with English subtitles - 108 min). Light Refreshments.

Japanese Film: Haru Tono Tabi (Haru’s Journey)(2010)

Haru's Journey provides an insider's look at Japanese culture through its themes of acceptance, endurance and familial commitment. It tells the story of elderly fisherman and his granddaughter, who live in a small fishing village in Hokkaido. It is also a road movie driven by family dynamics, as the two set out on a pilgrimage to live in Tokyo. (Japanese with English sub-titles -134 min). Reception to follow screening.

6:00 pm: Documentary film Dance with the Sea. Taiwan’s famous oceanic literature writer, Syaman Rapongan, takes viewers to Orchid Island to see how the Tao people live harmoniously with nature. (Mandarin narration, English synopsis - 13 min)

6:30 pm: Feature film Fishing Luck. Behong lives a very simple life as a fisherman on Orchid Island until Zing, a beautiful, quiet girl from Taipei flies in on a business trip. They gradually fall in love, but Zing has to return to Taipei. As a new flying fish season begins, will Behong and Zing find the courage to follow their hearts? (Mandarin with English subtitles - 96 min) Films followed by coffee and light refreshments.

As an Asian Canadian, is a tougher or easier to be successful in a creative field? Fashion designer Andy The-Anh (Montreal), jazz singer Peter Liu (Ottawa), visual artist and independent curator Minh Nguyen (Ottawa), film-maker and social activist Paul Nguyen (Toronto) will share their experience and thoughts on these questions and more in an engaging discussion moderated by William Lau, artist, educator and distinguished cultural worker. Off the Beaten Track also features an art and fashion show with works by Minh Nguyen, Paul Nguyen and Andy The-Anh, as well as a performance by Peter Liu fronting the all-Asian jazz trio Bamboo Groove.

First Generation Voices: Children of Asian Immigrants Share their Stories

Come and hear two prominent members of the Asian Community talk about their experience as children of Asian Immigrants. The Honourable Michael Chong, M.P. was first elected to Parliament in 2004. As cabinet minister, Michael served as President of the Queen’s Privy Council, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister for Sport. He was raised in a bi-racial family by a Chinese father and Dutch mother in a rural area near Fergus, Ontario. Sunny Uppal, M.P. grew up in an Indo-Canadian family in Markham, Ontario. He shares endearing stories of his family’s diversity, and how this is tied to Canadian values and his career goals.

6:00 pm: “Unknown Kinmen” This documentary takes viewers on an incredible journey to explore the unknown history of the island of Kinmen, or "Quemoy" as it is known to the West. Kinmen is literally The Golden Gate ("jin men") to the East and its known history goes back 6,000 years. See its unique culture and architecture through a multitude of cultural and historical sites and attractions. (45 min, English narration, Chinese subtitles)

7:00 pm: Feature film: “Our Island, Our Dreams” A romance-drama about three best friends - two young men and a young woman - growing up together in Kinmen and sharing their youthful and innocent dreams. However, the arrival of a soldier from Taiwan upsets the harmony when he pursues the young woman. ( 97 min, English subtitles)
