Foodsharing Ottawa

Foodsharing Ottawa Share food instead of throwing it away! Foodsharing Ottawa was founded in 2015 by a group of volunteers passionate about reducing food waste.

Our main focus is on rescuing surplus food from local businesses such as grocery stores and restaurants, and donating it back to the community where it’s needed. Through this work we are helping to reduce the environmental impact of food waste and address food insecurity in our community. Foodsharing Ottawa has partnered with a wide range of businesses across Ottawa who generously donate their sur

plus or unwanted food. We donate food to charities and not-for-profit organizations in Ottawa, who re-distribute it to those in need. In addition to donating rescued food, Foodsharing Ottawa promotes smarter ways to reduce food waste. Our page Share it - don't toss it! provides a platform for individuals and businesses in Ottawa to share food they don’t want to throw away. Our campaigns and educational events focus on food-saving practices at home, such as food preservation, understanding sell-by dates and smart food shopping. For more information visit us at http://www.foodsharingottawa.com/

Every small action counts. Whether it's reducing waste, conserving water, planting trees, or making mindful choices, together we can create a healthier planet for future generations.

At Foodsharing Ottawa, we want to reduce food waste by ensuring that surplus food is shared and put to good use. Through food rescue and redistribution, we help give perfectly good food a second chance while supporting our community and the environment.

Together, our individual actions can create a lasting positive impact.

Let's celebrate our Earth by protecting it today and every day. 💚

🥒 Nearly 30,000 pounds of cucumbers rescued and redistributed right back into the community! 🥒

When called us about a massive truckload of cucumbers at risk of being thrown away, we jumped into action. Moving that much refrigerated produce on short notice is a huge puzzle for a grassroots team, but our community showed up!

A giant thank you to Marc and Erb Transport for handling the vital refrigerated logistics, and to the Caldwell Family Centre for hosting our emergency hub. Over two action-packed days, local food banks, shelters, and residents helped us ensure nothing went to waste.

On the first slide, Giacomo Panico from CBC/Radio-Canada In Town and Out interviews Foodsharing Ottawa during the Cucumber Rescue.

To our volunteers: You are absolute rockstars. From unloading heavy pallets to making direct deliveries, you did an incredible job. We couldn't have done it without you.

Thank you to everyone who stepped up to show what community power can do! 💚

Dennis’ role in Foodsharing Ottawa is the Secretary in the Board of Directors. He joined Foodsharing Ottawa in 2024.

His favourite way to reduce food waste is to prepare multiple servings of the main dish and then freeze individual servings for later use.

Thank you Dennis for being part of Foodsharing Ottawa. Stay tuned for our next volunteer spotlight!

Jihane’s role in Foodsharing Ottawa is a Food Rescue Driver. She joined Foodsharing Ottawa in 2022.

One way that she reduces food waste is by not cooking food until her leftovers are gone. She cooks what she has and doesn’t buy what she doesn’t need.

Thank you Jihane for being part of Foodsharing Ottawa. Stay tuned for our next volunteer spotlight!
