Mediterranean Multicultural Forum - Ottawa Cross-disciplinary Annual Mediterranean Multicultural Forum held alternatively in Sulmona, Italy and Ottawa, Canada.

The Mediterranean Research Group (MedRG), organizer of the Mediterranean Multicultural Forum, seeks to showcase and discuss new research encounters between the variegated peoples and countries of the Mediterranean Basin and to promote interdisciplinary discussion among academics and professionals of all disciplines who either specialize or act within the geographical space of the Mediterranean. As

a think tank specialised in Mediterranean relations, our approach is multidisciplinary and encourages international networking, transcultural analysis, personal understanding, and social cooperation through the organisation of bi-yearly forums, occasional seminars, research projects, and on-line publications. The aim of the MedRG is to foster innovative research projects that contribute to the mutual understanding, intellectual exchange, practical cooperation, and productive dialogue amongst members of the region. Towards this end, the MedRG encourages and actively solicits participation from local embassies of the Mediterranean Basin located in the Canadian capital city of Ottawa. We expect these initiatives to remove barriers to working effectively across disciplines, to significantly improve our ability to conduct interdisciplinary research, scholarship and creative work, and to provide unparalleled interdisciplinary graduate education and training for our students.

The 2017 Mediterranean Multicultural Forum The Mediterranean Multicultural Forum will be held at The University of Ottawa 20-21 October 2017. The upcoming Forum is the second edition of the three day Mediterranean Forum held in Sulmona, Italy in June 2015.

La nobildonna Florisenda è intimamente legata alla fondazione del convento delle clarisse in Sulmona la cui chiesa di Santa Chiara è parte essenziale.
Florisenda nasce nel 1239, dopo due fratelli Simone e Odorisio, da Tommaso conte di Palena e la nobildonna Costanza dei Conti di Chieti.
L’ambiente in cui cresce Florisenda è profondamente religioso e osservante; spesso si raccontava con profonda compiacenza il soggiorno nel castello di Palena di Francesco d’Assisi (1216).
Dopo la morte del padre, Florisenda chiede ed ottiene (1268) dal fratello Simone la “dote di paraggio” consistente nella metà del territorio feudale di Forca Palena. Con questa eredità e con le 360 once d’oro donatele dalla madre fondò, in una struttura già esistente in Sulmona, il convento di clausura delle clarisse divenendone badessa fino al 1306, anno della sua morte.
Annessa al convento venne edificata la chiesa di Santa Chiara che subì, tra i vari terremoti, quello devastante del 1706. Nel 1711 fu iniziata la riedificazione su progetto dell’ architetto Fantoni , assumendo l’attuale connotazione barocca conformandosi però alle strutture precedenti.
