Between 1914 and 1920, Canada interned more than 8,000 people as "enemy aliens" under the War Measures Act. Most were Ukrainians.

Held in 24 camps across the country, they were made to work behind barbed wire, and thousands more were forced to report to police for years afterward. This history stayed buried for decades, and Canada formally acknowledged it only in 2005.
