Our partners at McGill University invite nominations for the Paul Farmer Award for Global Health Equity, recognizing global health practitioners with a sustained impact in underserved communities worldwide.

Established in 2024, this annual award honours individuals or couples whose work embodies Dr. Paul Farmer’s vision of a “preferential option for the poor” and advances health equity in underserved communities.

We seek to recognize exceptional practitioners from around the world, particularly from the Global South, whose impactful work may not always receive the recognition it deserves.

Nos partenaires de l’Université McGill (McGill University) invitent les mises en candidature pour le Prix Paul Farmer pour l’équité en santé mondiale, qui reconnaît les praticien·ne·s en santé mondiale ayant eu un impact durable au sein de communautés mal desservies à travers le monde.

Créé en 2024, ce prix annuel honore des personnes ou des couples dont le travail incarne la vision du Dr Paul Farmer d’une « option préférentielle pour les pauvres » et contribue à faire progresser l’équité en santé dans les communautés mal desservies.

Nous souhaitons mettre à l'honneur des professionnels exceptionnels du monde entier, en particulier issus des pays du Sud, dont le travail, pourtant déterminant, ne bénéficie pas toujours de la reconnaissance qu'il mérite.

📍 Poliomyélite | Semaine mondiale de la vaccination

Le poliovirus sauvage de type 1 (PVS1) demeure endémique au Pakistan et en Afghanistan — les deux seuls pays où la transmission endémique n'a pas été interrompue de manière durable. Cette persistance témoigne d'une lacune critique en matière d'équité en santé mondiale et représente un risque continu pour la sécurité sanitaire à l'échelle planétaire.

La poliomyélite est hautement contagieuse et entièrement évitable par la vaccination. Pourtant, des lacunes dans l'accès aux vaccins permettent à la transmission de se poursuivre. Bien que la plupart des infections soient asymptomatiques ou bénignes, le virus peut se propager de manière inaperçue — et environ 1 infection sur 200 entraîne une paralysie irréversible, touchant principalement les jeunes enfants. Il n'existe aucun traitement curatif.

Tant que le PVS1 circule quelque part dans le monde, aucun pays n'est pleinement protégé contre le risque d'importation. Les détections récentes de poliovirus dans des échantillons environnementaux de pays à revenu élevé illustrent bien cette réalité.

À l'Association canadienne pour la santé mondiale (ACSM), nous soulignons que l'éradication mondiale de la poliomyélite est à portée de main — mais les dernières étapes exigent des investissements soutenus, des stratégies axées sur l'équité et une solidarité mondiale afin d'atteindre chaque enfant, partout.

📍 Polio | World Immunization Week

Wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) remains endemic in Pakistan and Afghanistan—the only two countries where endemic transmission has not been sustainably interrupted. This persistence reflects a critical gap in global health equity and poses an ongoing risk to health security worldwide.

Polio is highly contagious and entirely vaccine-preventable, yet gaps in access mean transmission continues. While most infections are asymptomatic or mild, the virus can spread undetected—yet about 1 in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis, primarily affecting young children. There is no cure.

As long as WPV1 circulates anywhere, no country is fully protected from the risk of importation. Recent detections of poliovirus in environmental samples in high-income countries underscore this reality.

At the Canadian Association for Global Health (CAGH), we emphasize that global eradication of polio is within reach—but the final steps require sustained investment, equity-driven strategies, and global solidarity to reach every child, everywhere.

📍 Neglected Tropical Diseases & Malaria | World Immunization Week

For the first time in decades, child deaths are rising, often due to preventable and treatable infectious diseases for which effective tools already exist, including malaria and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). While several routine childhood vaccines continue to keep us safe from some of the world’s most deadly diseases, more investment is needed to develop new vaccines for NTDs.

While malaria and most NTDs rely on a combination of control measures, such as community-wide preventive treatments and targeted interventions, few have benefited from vaccines. That is beginning to change: a malaria vaccine is now available, and several NTD vaccine candidates are in development that could accelerate elimination efforts.

Canada has a long-standing role in global health and vaccine innovation, contributing to breakthroughs for diseases such as smallpox, polio, diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus, as well as foundational work supporting Ebola vaccine development.

At the Canadian Association for Global Health (CAGH), we emphasize the importance of sustained scientific collaboration and investment in vaccine research, particularly for the most neglected diseases, to advance global health equity and reduce preventable child deaths.
