The 2016 Peace Agreement between the Government of Colombia and the FARC-EP includes an Ethnic Chapter — the first of its kind in any peace agreement. This chapter was designed to protect the rights of Indigenous, Afro-Colombian and Roma peoples and ensure their inclusion in the implementation of the peace agreement.

These commitments provide an important lens through which to examine pluralism in Colombia today. Our Colombia Monitor Report assesses the state of pluralism through indicators such as its commitment to international law and treaties, constitutional protections for ethnic rights, and the implementation of these commitments.

To explore pluralism in Colombia including key gaps and opportunities, read our Monitor report: https://monitor.pluralism.ca/publication/colombia-report/

Our work in Colombia has connected us to the people and communities at the heart of these issues reminding us that progress toward inclusion and belonging must also be reflected in how societies respond to moments of crisis. Our partner on the ground, the Women of the Ethnic Commission Returning Together to the Root (Mujeres de la Comisión Étnica) is currently providing assistance to Colombians affected by the recent earthquake that has devastated communities in the country's pacific coast.

There is no single way to advance pluralism.

It can look like defending rights, building trust across differences, creating more inclusive institutions, opening space for underrepresented voices, or helping communities live together with greater dignity and the certainty that they belong.

From classrooms to public office, arts to grassroots organizing, every leader counts. Know someone making a difference? Nominate them for the Global Pluralism Award by July 10th at award.pluralism.ca.

Who will you recognize today?

Despite being a country rich in diversity, Sudan's 'Unity in Conformity' ideology legitimizes discrimination and drives conflict. The Global Pluralism Monitor: Sudan Report brings a deep dive into the country's realities. The report hows how pluralism will be a necessary tool for the rebuilding of a Sudan that is united, open to embracing its diversity, and committed to addressing the inequalities and divisions that were deepened by the conflict that started in 2023.
