Today at the Mastercard Foundation office, WUSC, in collaboration with the Foundation, its partners, UNHCR, and the Ghana Refugee Board, commemorated World Refugee Day under the theme: “Talent Beyond Borders: Unlocking Refugee Potential through an Inclusive and Enabling Environment.”

The event brought together key stakeholders committed to advancing opportunities for refugees and fostering inclusive development. We were proud to have 10 refugee participants from the ACTIVATE Project representing Kintampo North District, Ampain, and Krisan. They spoke passionately on behalf of refugee youth, amplifying their voices and sharing their aspirations.

A powerful message emerged from their contributions: refugees are human beings first and foremost. They want to be seen, valued, and included as such. While humanitarian assistance remains important, they emphasized that they are not defined by aid alone. They possess talents, skills, and immense potential, and they are capable of contributing meaningfully to society through work and entrepreneurship.

The youth also challenged stakeholders to look beyond age as the sole criterion for development interventions, advocating for greater recognition of experience, potential, passion, and capability.

The event was both thought-provoking and inspiring. More importantly, it marked the beginning of stronger collaboration and synergy among refugee-serving institutions working alongside the Mastercard Foundation to unlock opportunities and create lasting impact for refugee communities

Across Kenya, thousands of young people, including refugees and members of host communities, face significant barriers to employment and entrepreneurship. While many are eager to build sustainable livelihoods, limited access to market-relevant skills, business support, limited digital opportunities, and employment pathways often stands in the way.

Grounded in more than 40 years of experience creating opportunities for young people, WUSC continues in it's longstanding commitment to creating education and economic opportunities for young people, particularly those affected by displacement. By working alongside local organizations, training institutions, private sector actors, and refugee-led partners, we continue to create more inclusive pathways to livelihoods and economic resilience.

This World Refugee Day, we stand in solidarity with millions forced to flee conflict and persecution worldwide. We believe that true safety is rooted in dignity, education, and opportunity.

For decades, we’ve worked alongside displaced youth to turn the promise of protection into a reality. Because until everyone is safe to learn, earn, and thrive, our work is not done.

This , WUSC is scaling some of its most ambitious commitments yet to expand opportunities for the millions of young people around the globe impacted by forced displacement.

As displacement reaches historic levels, we are scaling bold solutions that expand access to education, employment, and lasting opportunities for displaced youth.

This year marks significant milestones:
✨ STEP in Kenya aims to support 10,000 young people with skills training and pathways to work.
✨ DREEM2030 is advancing refugee inclusion across Africa, working toward 1 million youth in dignified work, 35,000 displaced youth in higher education, and partnerships with 60+ refugee-led organizations.
💫 SRP2030 aims to double sponsored student opportunities by 2030.
💫 Global Skills to Work is expanding labour mobility pathways into in-demand sectors in Atlantic Canada.

Together with our partners around the world, we are creating opportunities that enable displaced youth not only to rebuild their lives—but to shape the future.

To mark , we're proud to celebrate an expanded partnership with the Shapiro Foundation.

Through a landmark investment, WUSC will expand access to education, employment, and permanent protection pathways for refugee youth in Canada.

This support will help us:
🎓 Grow the with the goal of doubling the number of sponsored students—from 150 to 300 annually by 2030.
💼 Expand labour mobility pathways that connect skilled refugees with employers across Canada facing critical workforce shortages.

For nearly 50 years, we've seen the impact of what happens when refugee youth are given the opportunity to succeed: communities grow stronger, employers gain essential talent, and young people build brighter futures.

✨ From newcomers to Canadians.

Today, in Ottawa, we were honoured to host our second citizenship ceremony in partnership with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada.

During the ceremony, we officially welcomed 86 newcomers, from over 40 countries, as they took their oath and became Canadian citizens.

Through our work, we are supporting refugee resettlement through education and labour mobility pathways. Together with our partners, we help create opportunities for refugees to continue their education, fill critical labour gaps, and go on to make meaningful contributions to Canadian society.

We are proud that this work culminates in moments like today—welcoming new citizens whose contributions continue to strengthen communities across Canada.

🎉 Join us in celebrating Canada's newest citizens!
