The Association des Gardiens du Territoire Nehirowisiw Aski is an organization formed by Nehirowisiw women, made up of matriarchs, hereditary chiefs, and land defenders of Nehirowisiw territory to advocate for the revitalization of matriarchal and traditional structures. They have been on the frontlines blockading and protesting the overexploitation of forests in their territory.

This year, a winterized camp was set up for continued occupation at what is known as Camp Souveraineté or Camp 134. This allows for the Gardiens and supporters on the territory to have a home base and launch other blockades across their territory. To support the Gardiens and the work they do, you can follow the blockade on Instagram , and attend our fundraiser on Saturday, March 21, to help raise funds to keep the camp going. The Nehirowisiw land defenders have been safeguarding their ancestral lands of Nitaskinan, a vast territory of 80,000 km2, from logging for over half a decade. Resistance has not been easy, but these blockades and protests have not just been about stopping logging. These land defenders are directly resisting colonial extraction and the destruction of their territory.

They are keeping up their land defense efforts throughout the winter at Camp Souveraineté, at Km 134 Chemin Parent. You can show your solidarity by providing financial support to keep the camp going. You can also follow the blockade on Instagram

DID YOU KNOW!

Nehirowisiw land defenders in Quebec are engaging in an essential frontline landback struggle RIGHT NOW on their territory north-east of Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. Matriarchs, hereditary chiefs, and land defenders of Nehirowisiw territory have raised the alarm about the level of logging on their territory for over half a decade. Tensions came to head this summer when the CAQ (Coalition Avenir Québec) government tabled Bill-97 which would have brought sweeping changes to forestry law potentially opening up 8 million hectares, or a third of the forests in Quebec, ignoring Indigenous concerns or treaty rights. Fierce resistance from Indigenous leadership and environmental advocates across Quebec eventually forced the Quebec government to drop the bill, but not without tense standoffs and blatant racism at the frontlines.
This winter, Nehirowisiw land defenders established Camp Souveraineté, a permanent site of resistance, protection of territory, and affirmation of their sovereignty. It has been a hard winter, and the Nehirowisiw continue to face tense confrontation from logging companies and forestry workers.
