Obed said he's keen to see what Simon does next. He said he's hoping she'll help ITK push forward with the creation of Inuit Nunangat University — an institution Simon championed as ITK president.

He said he also hopes she sets aside time to unwind after an eventful few years.

"She loves to berry pick and she loves to be in Inuit Nunangat," Obed said.

"So I hope that she's able to relax a little bit."

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami extends our best wishes to Her Excellency Louise Arbour as she begins her tenure as Governor General of Canada. Her remarks at her installation today were inspiring. Our country is shared work. We do not all share the same understanding of our history. And we all shape what Canada will become.

ITK looks forward to working with our new Governor General, to not slow our momentum. And we look forward to sharing our perspectives with you.

“I look at Canada through the eyes of someone who has known it both up close and from afar, always with admiration. A country that is not afraid to reinvent itself.”

Governor General Arbour has formally delivered her first address to Canadians.

After decades of shaping international justice and advancing human rights, she brings her distinguished service home once again. As Canada’s governor general, she will represent the Crown and uphold the nation’s constitutional and ceremonial traditions.

04 June 2026 — ICC Canada will host the office of the ICC Chair starting in July 2026 and is responsible for nominating an Inuk leader to this four-year position. The ICC Chair is the international leader of the Inuit Circumpolar Council and represents Inuit from across Inuit Nunaat (the Inuit homeland that spans Canada, Alaska, Greenland, and Chukotka).

Through a public nomination period for the position of ICC Chair and after a thorough review process of all applicants, the ICC Canada Board of Directors unanimously supported the nomination of Aluki Kotierk for the 2026-2030 ICC Chair term.

Inuit delegates from across Inuit Nunaat have been notified and a resolution to acclaim the nominee for ICC Chair will be presented on the closing day of the 2026 ICC General Assembly. This is scheduled to take place on July 25, 2026 in Iqaluit, Nunavut.

Additional Information on the role of ICC Chair:

The ICC Chair is the international leader of the Inuit Circumpolar Council. They are the public face of the organization, representing Inuit of Canada, Alaska, Greenland, and Chukotka at international forums and in the media. The ICC Chair coordinates the ICC Executive Council in their implementation of ICC’s mandate, to be contained in the 2026 ICC Declaration that is given by delegates to the 2026 ICC General Assembly. The ICC Chair is a consensus builder, ensuring that each Executive Council member and the regions they represent are heard and reflected in ICC activities and decisions.

The Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) is an Indigenous Peoples’ Organization (IPO), founded in 1977 to promote and celebrate the unity of 180,000 Inuit from Alaska (USA), Canada, Greenland, and Chukotka (Russia). ICC works to promote Inuit rights, safeguard the Arctic environment, and protect and promote the Inuit way of life. In regard to climate change, we believe that it is crucial for world leaders and governments to recognize, respect and fully implement the human rights of Inuit and all other Indigenous peoples across the globe.
