Shabbat Shalom, Jewish Ottawa 🕯

In this week’s Shabbat message, Federation President & CEO Hartley Stern reflects on Israel’s contributions to the world through medical innovation, humanitarian aid and water technology, grounded in the Jewish value that saving one life is like saving an entire world.

He also reflects on the third anniversary of October 7, remembering the victims, including Ottawa’s own Adi Vital-Kaploun, and the more than 500 community members who gathered at the Soloway JCC for an evening of remembrance, solidarity and hope.

Thank you to all who joined us last night to mark October 7.

As a community, we gathered in solemn remembrance through song and prayer to honour those who lost their lives and to strengthen the bonds between Ottawa and Israel.

A special thank you to Israel in Canada, the Soloway JCC, and Hillel Ottawa for partnering with us on this event.

Today, the community will have the opportunity to leave a stone and a message at the October 7 Monument at the Soloway JCC.

We invite you to pause, reflect on the tragic events of October 7, and remember all the victims, including the Canadian victims and Ottawa’s own Adi Vital-Kaploun.

Today marks three years since the October 7 terrorist attacks, which claimed the lives of 1,200 Israelis and saw the taking of 251 hostages into Gaza. As we remember those taken from us, we honour their memory by standing together, united in resilience and strength. May their memories be a blessing. 🕯

Your gift to Federation's Annual Community Campaign helps sustain the network of organizations, services and experiences that make Jewish life possible across Ottawa.

Powering critical social infrastructure such as Jewish Family Services, Tamir and Hillel Lodge, Federation is here for when it matters most.

Frances, a Hillel Lodge resident, is just one of the many people who is supported through this network of social service organizations:

"There is such a good feeling of being Jewish here — from matzo ball soup and brisket on Friday night to the programs and activities that bring us together. The staff always go the extra mile to make us smile and help us enjoy a good quality of life. We are in the best of hands.”
