Sauvetage Bénévole Outaouais - Ottawa Volunteer SAR Volunteer SAR team for Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. Account not monitored 24/7

From a team of over 250 members, SBO-OVSAR can rapidly deploy highly trained search and rescue personnel at the request of any police authority. Our members donate their expertise, time and equipment to respond to missing or lost persons emergencies in the National Capital Region and western Quebec. The team is available at any time to respond to calls in both urban and wilderness environments. SB

O-OVSAR members are trained in ground search and rescue techniques as well as first aid, tracking, moving water safety and various other topics. Operational funding is provided by donations of money and equipment from individuals and businesses and through revenue from our public training programs. SBO-OVSAR also offers the Hug a Tree and Survive awareness and survival education presentations to children and groups including Scouts Canada, Girl Guides of Canada, Ottawa Canoe Club, school groups, and private requests. SBO-OVSAR is a registered charity and can provide income tax receipts for any charitable donations over $10.

Our mountain bike team on a recent training in the Gatineau park. A great turnout and opportunity to assess & qualify all members! Great work guys!

Mountain bikes are a great asset during searches when areas need to be checked hastily and efficiently. We are proud to have a sizable group that works hard to stay prepared when the call comes.

As emergency preparedness week comes to a close SBO-OVSAR wants to make sure you have an emergency plan in place if the worst happens.

Having a plan helps bring calm to the chaos when immediate action is required and critical thinking becomes more challenging. Where do we go? Who do we call? What if we get separated? Each section of an emergency plan is detailed in this post however creating one online has never been easier. See the link at the end for how to make a plan in 20 minutes!

Photos from this post are all from emergencies SBO-OVSAR has been deployed to within the last year including ice storms, flooding and wildfires. We are proud to have so many dedicated members volunteer their time when disaster strikes.

A big congratulations goes out to the Spring 2026 BSAR recruits for Ottawa Volunteer Search and Rescue!

Last weekend our new BSARs completed their Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) the final field component of their certification to become active searchers. SAREX involves regular team members and new recruits running through simulated search scenarios with many hours of searching, applying first aid skills, and rescuing subjects. Challenging their adaptability, creativity, and basic searcher skills. A seamless day with a lot of ground covered!

SBO-OVSAR warmly welcomes you all to the team! Great job everyone 👏🏼

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that past and honorary member of SBO-OVSAR (and SAR Global 1), Paul St-Onge has passed away.

Paul was foundational in building our relationship with La Cité and our engagement with students in the Police Foundations program. During the 2018 tornado response, his students stepped forward to support SBO-OVSAR as we managed the many operational demands before us. And, with his vision, a number of SBO-OVSAR members had the opportunity to bring GSAR fundamentals to the students in the La Cite program strengthening the future ties between volunteers and police officers.

Paul was also deeply involved in the drone and RPAS community and contributed to the development of Humanitarian Workforce RPAS capabilities with the Search and Rescue Volunteer Association of Canada (SARVAC), enabling GSAR teams from across Canada to respond to disasters across the country such as the wildfires in Manitoba and Newfoundland last summer.

Paul was truly a mover and shaker — a strong community catalyst and a dedicated educational leader. He will be greatly missed across the many diverse groups he supported and inspired.

Paul’s son Scott St-Onge, was involved with SBO-OVSAR alongside his father. And we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Scott and the entire family during this difficult time.

If you knew Paul, you knew his kind heart and his relentless drive. Paul will be greatly missed by the SAR community, but his impact will not be forgotten and will live on for many years to come.
