Who are Rotarians? Community-minded people from all walks of life who come together through Rotary clubs for friendship and fellowship, to help fund community projects, to get involved in ‘doing’ - people like you! Who is the Rotary Club of Nepean-Kanata? Your local Rotary club and one of the Rotary in Ottawa family of 10 clubs in Ottawa. We currently meet Thursday evenings via Zoom, and in person once a month at a local patio to socialise and enjoy each other’s company. Community - We fundraise to support local community groups such as FAMSAC, Michele Heights Community House, the Caldwell Family Centre and the Dr. F. MacDonald Elementary School. We helped the Caldwell Family Centre purchase a much needed new van which they use for donation collections and deliveries to vulnerable individuals and families. In 2021 we raised funds to help the Crystal Bay Centre for Special Education in Nepean purchase a wheelchair accessible swing. The swing will be installed in 2022 when funding is secured. We have adopted a portion of West Hunt Club Road under the Adopt a Roadway Program and each year we clean our portion of Hunt Club. Education - We run an annual Adventure in High Technology program for sponsored high school students in Ontario. The virtual program exposes students to the wide variety of technology opportunities and education facilities across Canada. The program brings senior high school students to Ottawa for 4-day exposure to the wide variety of technology opportunities and education facilities in our area.We support youth through our annual bursary program which provides a $1,000 bursary to eight deserving students in Ottawa. We provide ‘Go with the Flow’ kits to young girls in Ghana and Uganda so they can go to school during their menstrual cycle. Youth - The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Program brings participants 30 and younger together for a weekend of leadership training and development. Our club participates in the Rotary Youth Exchange Program sponsoring a student to spend a year abroad on an educational/cultural exchange and hosting a student here for the school year to experience our culture. These students become ambassadors for our Rotary club, for Canada and experience a learning opportunity that would not be possible without our assistance. We are able to contribute to all of these initiatives through our various fundraising efforts during the year. We sell chrysanthemums at Thanksgiving, Rotary cash calendars, and we run a charity bingo several times each month. Our members meet weekly for fellowship and to discuss project possibilities and fundraising opportunities. Each week we have a speaker presentation on a variety of subjects.
