Scouts Canada National Museum

Scouts Canada National Museum The Scouts Canada National Museum is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Scouting Movement in Canada.

The Scouts Canada National Museum preserves and holds artifacts and archives from the beginning of the Scouting movement in England. Our particular focus is on the development of the movement in Canada. Anywhere Canadian Scouts have played a role, within the Group, attending Regional, Provincial, National or International Events, are important to our Scouting History.

Another successful Doors Open Ottawa! 174 people visited the Museum. We had visitors from Barry Ontario, Montreal, and Toronto along with lots of Ottawa and area visitors. Families with younger children participated in the "Beaver Scavenger Hunt"; lots of laughter.

We had a visitor looking for information on her Grandparent who attended the Coronation of King George V in 1911. We have a display on the Scouting Adventure just four years after its Baden-Powell started the movement.

Another visitor wanted to show his children the badges he worked on as Cub. His children were amazed at the 'Olde" program badges.

A special visitor came to see the displays on the Canadian Jamboree in 1953 and the World Jamboree in 1955. He had been at both as a Scout.

A good Scouting weekend.

Necker worn by Horace Whiffin to the Coronation of King George V, 1911. Note that the necker was a square piece of fabric. There is a great deal of sun damage. The fabric was folded in half and then they used the traditional folding process. The little white rectangle is the name tag. In World War I he was with the 175th Battalion and suffered deafness due to concussion at Pachendale.

Another Youth selected "My Favourite Artifact"; Mervin Lett's shirt and Scouting diary. The page of the diary that is open tells of him getting accepted to attend the World Jamboree in Niagara on the Lake. The list of the badges he earned was included in the diary. Mervin became interested in medicine while a scout taking First Aide courses in Minnedosa, Manitoba. He went on to become a doctor working with UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation) . He retired as the head of orthopedic surgery at CHEO.
