Consider joining the Innis Point Bird Observatory! The IPBO is a 43-year-old non-profit organization located on the Ottawa River near Shirley’s Bay. IPBO carries out bird research that involves monitoring bird populations in migration and during the breeding season. Consider becoming a member! Your annual fee of $30 (individuals) or $60 (family) allows you to observe our bird banding sessions on site in springtime and helps support bird conservation in Canada.

If you look back for last year's CBC at IPBO, you can easily see how much different the temperature was! Cold and windy meant fewer birds overall this year, but smiling facing clearly indicate a good morning by all!

Pretty quiet for birds on today's Christmas Bird Count on the CRPTC as part of the Dunrobin CBC. Open waters on the river meant waterfowl represented the highlights this year (American Black Duck, Mallards, Canada Geese, Red-breasted and Common Mergansers and Common Goldeneyes). Thanks to all who came out to participate!

The first morning of SMMP 2023 was decent, with 47 birds banded, even though more than half the nets are inaccessible due to water levels. Here is one highlight from those captured and released.

Our mist nets are designed to catch passerines or near passerines i.e. small birds. That doesn't stop something larger from ever being caught. For example, a Broad-winged Hawk.

There's a very interesting mix of feather ages on this bird.

(As Innis Point is not banding currently, this is from a nearby station.)
